It really depends on where you are. They come frequently...maybe at least one you can feel every month or every two months, especially if you live in the northeast area. The shaking is strong but usually there's not too much damage.

I live in Tokyo. Sometimes it feels like a jolt and something it shakes for a while. But it usually ends after 10 seconds or so. Just have an earthquake kit ready just in case.
