Shumei University

Japan is home to different higher education institutions with diverse backgrounds and institutional philosophies. Founded upon the principle of embodying practical knowledge and deep understanding of the changing needs of the world, Shumei University was established in 1988. The university is located within the Yachiyo district of Chiba Prefecture. Shumei University is relatively small as compared to other universities and colleges in Japan. It only accommodates roughly more than 2,000 students. Despite its small stature, the institution promises a comprehensive provision of tertiary education on fields of business, nursing, teaching, tourism, and the English language.

The university runs with the principle of giving practical education and expertise to students who are deemed to contribute to society in the future. Equipping students with broad perspectives towards the processing and resolving changing trends and demands of the society through extensive teaching and research is the prime commitment of the institution. 

It also adheres to the expectation of the international community by teaching some of its courses in English. This offers an educational opportunity, not for Japanese locals but also for international students as well. In 2019, there were around 184 international students who were enrolled in the university. It just proves how such a small university can still involve itself and its students with the flow of worldwide integration, a promising feature of the university.

Campus Facilities

Shumei University boasts its top of the line educational and leisure facilities that cater the students. Here are some of the major facilities of Shumei University within the campus:

It also has a huge dormitory complex within its vicinity that provides accommodation to the students and faculty members.

Students are drawn into an enthusiastic learning environment at Shumei University. The administration regularly organizes and hosts open lectures from visiting professors from countries such as Australia, England, and Germany. Mainly, the colloquium focuses on classes regarding the English language and education discipline. These kinds of discussions are held in the English salon facility of the school.

Campus Events

Every June, July, August, September, October and November, Shumei University opens it campus to outsiders. Through the open campus, the university administration involving the teachers in collaboration with the students accommodate visitors for school-based activities that aim to introduce Shumei University. Activities such as campus tour and open lectures are included in the roster of the program. This attracts students, not only from Yachiyo but around Japan. 

Furthermore, every November, the school host the annual Flight Festival. Flight Festival is an annual celebration to commemorate the foundation of the university. Various events such as lectures, performances, seminars, club activities and sporting events are held in the campus for the festival. Students with their families are encouraged to participate in such festivity.

Study Abroad Programme in the UK

What is unique about Shumei University undergraduate programs is that it provides the students a chance to study abroad through a partnership with another institution located in Canterbury, England. Chaucer College Canterbury is an educational institution reserved exclusively for Japanese students from Shumei University. Founded in 1992 by a Shumei alumnus, Hiroshi Kawashima, it looks forward to training students from the university in the English language. Through such a learning project, students of Shumei University were able to expose themselves to the international community.

Such a visiting program includes students from the secondary level and freshmen at the college level. These students are sent to England and study there for one academic year. The procedure is not limited to classroom pieces of training only but also immersion activities in the home university community. This is definitely a good way to give the students an adequate background on what it is like to interact with foreigners. 

Moreover, students are also immersed within the community because the accommodation in Chaucer College is through a homestay. The students live with the local families in their homes and through such a set up, students learn the way of life of the people in the community. 

Enrollment Procedures, Tuition and Scholarships

The university has a centralized admission schedule for international students. Regardless of their status, international students should begin processing their application forms the previous year before the commencement of classes. Classes at Shumei University in April. International applicants should go ahead with their application by September to November of the previous year. In the mentioned months of application, the university will organize special entrance examinations that will cater to prospective international students. The test will cover basic knowledge and English and Japanese language proficiency. But before proceeding with the examination, here are the documents that should be prepared beforehand:

  • Valid Passport

  • Application Form

  • Certification of passing the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (N1 or N2 level)

  • Letter of recommendation from the principal of the Japanese language school where the certification was granted

These requirements should be brought to the testing center for the assessment of the examiner. Whenever the applicant passed the entrance examination, he or she may now proceed with the processing of student visa to be accomplished in the Japanese embassy of their home country.

On average, tuition fees at Shumei University may cost from ¥350,000 to ¥400,000 every semester. The range depends upon the degree program. The school also collects fees, including enrollment fees, education enhancement fees, and experimental enhancement fees, that may have a total cost of ¥320,000 every semester. However, international students could apply for the scholarship programs offered by the university. The selection process is done through the assessment of the entrance examination results. It can guarantee a scholarship stipend that covers all the expenses that may cost ¥300,000 to ¥1,000,000 annually. Of course, this is contingent on the qualification of the student.

Shumei University in Japan may not be well-known internationally but by learning its features, it could be said that it deserves the limelight. Aside from its favorable environment for learning, policies that ensure the welfare of the students, and excellent facilities, it also owns a one of a kind educational exchange program that develops students within an international environment.
