Sightseeing in Tokyo

There are many tourist attractions in Japan, and Tokyo has plenty of them. Being the capital city, Tokyo is one of the busiest metropolitan areas in Japan. With its mouth-watering Japanese cuisine, unique activities and experiences, and majestic architectural structures, indeed, Tokyo is one of the prime tourist destinations not just in Japan but in the whole world!

A brief explanation of Tokyo's districts

Because Tokyo is very vast, this city is divided into twenty districts (23), each with their own sets of neighborhoods. Here are two of the most popular districts that most people have heard of.

  • Shibuya

When one thinks about Tokyo, bright lights, neon colors, and a busy district are some of the images that would usually pop into someone's head… and that's what the Shibuya district offers. This is one of the busiest districts in Tokyo and hosts a plethora of exciting activities for Japanese and foreign tourists alike! It provides a wide variety of shopping options for those who would want to shop both international and local brands, have an authentic Japanese dining experience, and enjoy several entertainment facilities to boot! Shibuya’s famous landmarks include the Shibuya Scramble Crossing and Hachiko, the statue of the dog who patiently waited years for his master’s return.

  • Shinjuku

Shinjuku is one of the largest districts in Japan and also hosts an exciting nightlife. Tourists who would want to experience a unique night out they would surely never forget. A memorable and popular activity to do in Shinjuku is karaoke with friends. It also offers a wide variety of places such as hole-in-the-wall restaurants, bookstores, theaters, and art galleries. Aside from the activities mentioned, Shinkuju is also a shopping haven for many as it offers both local shopping centers and international brands.

Some unique neighborhoods to explore

Since Tokyo offers a wide variety of unique Japanese experiences for many tourists, let's take a look at some of them that one can explore.

Akihabara

For anime and manga lovers, Akihabara is the ultimate place to be! It is considered to be a haven for otakus, or individuals who are extremely big fans of anime and manga, as many of the shops are promoting and selling a wide variety of anime and manga products - from comic books to action figures, you name it. Akihabara probably has it! The otaku culture is also evident because of the numerous maid cafes, which have now become a popular tourist bucket list item for tourists. Aside from being famous for its vast promotion of anime and manga merchandise, it is also known as the Akihabara Electric Town because it also offers a plethora of electronic devices and parts. Lastly, Akihabara hosts multiple arcade and video game establishments for those who want to try out Japan’s latest games.

Odaiba

Odaiba hosts the best of both worlds as it offers a scenic, calm, and serene view of the Tokyo Bay on one end, and it also offers a bustling entertainment hub if you turn around, with the beautiful Rainbow Bridge in between. Another interesting fact is that Odaiba is an artificial island that was originally built as a fort to protect Tokyo from attacks. Its economy zoomed back on the map after an economic recession as more and more shopping centers, malls, and hotels built their properties in the area. One notable shopping district in Odaiba is the Venus Fort which is a shopping center with an 18th century Southern European theme that boasts of fascinating greek-inspired architecture. Now, Odaiba is one of Tokyo's busiest districts that foreign tourists would get to enjoy!

Shimokitazawa

For anyone who would want to explore Tokyo more, Shimokitazawa is the place to be! Considered as Japan's hipster center, it hosts a variety of activities and experiences that are unique to Japan. In its narrow streets, it offers many second-hand thrift shops from old Japanese books to clothes! It also offers many unique dining experiences such as local beer and authentic Japanese cuisines.

Kappabashi or Kitchen Town

For anyone who has a passion in the kitchen, Kappabashi or Kitchen Town is heaven on earth! Kappabashi offers a wide variety of kitchenware ranging from traditional Japanese bowls to ceramic plates. It’s also a good place to buy other kitchen wares such as knives, interesting Japanese utensils, and fake food samples, all great souvenirs. It is truly an important landmark for anyone who wants to experience authentic Japanese ceramics.

Nippori

For tourists who would want to see a glimpse of traditional Japanese culture through temples, Nippori should be part of your bucket list. Nippori is home for many famous temples in Tokyo, such as the Tennoji Temple, which features a Buddha statue, the Yanaka Seven Gods of Fortune, and a five-story Pagoda Ruins. Nippori is also home to traditional fabrics as it houses Nippori Textile District, full of local fabric stores.

Neighborhoods for all your shopping and dining needs

Your Tokyo experience will never be complete without these famous shopping and dining centers!

Daikanyamacho

Daikanyamacho, or as they fondly call it, the Brooklyn of Tokyo, is a picturesque neighborhood that offers pubs, quaint cafe shops, and gourmet deli food. It also offers a unique shopping experience that leans towards designer and luxury. It also provides a wide variety of bookstores and shops that are turned into cocktail bars in the night.

Kagurazaka

Kagurazaka is another must-see in Tokyo as it offers kaiseki, which is considered as the pinnacle of Japanese cuisine and only offers the best ingredients depending on the season. There are also a lot of French expatriates in the area, which is the reason why Kagurazaka absorbed French culture, most notably French cuisine which includes french pastries such as croissants and macarons. Kagurazaka also hosts the famous Japanese Geisha, who entertain guests at various teahouses and traditional Japanese restaurants hidden away in the district along its cobblestone streets.

Tsukiji

For seafood lovers, Tsukiji is definitely the place to be. Tsukiji used to have a fish market that was considered the biggest fish market in the world, but the fish market itself was moved to Toyosu recently. However, if you are craving for mouthwatering seafood, you can still head to Tsukiji as it offers outer markets who sell the freshest catch of the day with the plentiful options for sashimi bowls and sushi.

Ginza

For shopping enthusiasts, Ginza is a shopping haven for many as it hosts a plethora of expensive international and local brands, perfect for an afternoon weekend shopping spree. Aside from offering high-end fashion boutiques which have international designer brands, Ginza also offers different activities. For fans of kabuki theater, make sure to get a ticket for the Kabuki-za Theater for a dazzling kabuki play. Ginza also offers the Itoya stationary store which is an arts and crafts haven for anyone who wants to have kawaii-themed stationery products. And the luxurious food in Ginza is a must-try for those who have an expensive palette.

Summary

Japan offers a wide variety of unique activities both for locals and tourists alike. From kitchenware to shopping, Tokyo definitely offers unique neighborhoods that everyone can enjoy. If you visit Japan, make sure that you get to visit Tokyo and all the sights and sounds that it has to offer!
