Japan is one of the top economies in the world. Though studying in Japan is relatively affordable as compared to countries like the UK and USA, there are also provisions to win scholarships for financial freedom. In this article we will discuss various scholarships which are available for Indian students.

Higher Education in Japan 

Japan is a popular location for overseas visitors. It is well known for its technological advancement, work ethics, rich culture and safe environment. As a result, it is one of the top preferred countries for higher education. Its value on education is renowned in the world.

However, it can be expensive to study in Japan, especially in major cities. We’ve introduced many scholarships on this site. This time, however, we will focus on scholarships that students from India specifically can avail themselves of. 

Japanese Government Scholarships 

There are various scholarships provided to students of India based on merit and other criteria. For details please read below.

MEXT (Ministry of Education Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) scholarships

This is the one of the most common and famous Japanese Government scholarships. It supports Indian students, as well as students from around the world, for higher education opportunities.It also promotes healthy relationships between countries.

Students who wish to pursue higher studies under MEXT in Japan can choose from 7 scholarship programs offered by Japanese government.These scholarships are for undergraduates, post graduates and Research Students.

For all the programs, education fees are exempted and round-trip airfare will be provided along with a monthly stipend depending on which course you are enrolled in.

JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization) Scholarships

 One scholarship JASSO offers is the Student Exchange Support Program (Scholarship for Short-term Study in Japan). However, this scholarship is only for short term study programs. They offer scholarships under student exchange arrangements between Japanese universities and home universities. This is for students from junior college, undergraduate or professional training college under a student exchange agreement on a short-term basis for up to 1 year. Students are given a monthly stipend approximately 80,000 Yen.

Some of the terms include 

  • Students should be from countries that have diplomatic relations with Japan

  • Students who show exceptional academic records.

Scholarships for Indian Students by Private Foundations

T. Banaji Indian Students Scholarship

This scholarship is sponsored by an organization called Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES). This is for Indian students for undergraduate, masters and doctoral programs. The admission period is between August and November. Students need to apply through their schools. The application period is from August to November. Students are given a monthly stipend of 100,000 yen.

DOCOMO International Student Scholarship

This scholarship is also sponsored by Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES). This is a masters program scholarship for 2 years. There are approximately 15 spots available. Students need to apply through school. It is for Indians as well as students who are native to Indonesia, Korea, Cambodia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and a list of other Asian countries.The application period is from March to May. Students are given a monthly stipend of 120,000 yen.

Seiho Scholarship

This scholarship is sponsored by Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES). It is for an undergraduate and master's program for 2 years. Students need to contact the designated schools. There are approximately 8 seats. The application period is from December to January. Scholars receive a monthly stipend of 100,000 yen.

Sato Yo International Scholarship Foundation

This foundation offers scholarships programs twice a year. Their application period is from May to August (Spring) and November to January (fall). This is an undergraduate and graduate program with a maximum 2 years course. Students must submit filled forms through the student affairs office. The stipend for an undergraduate is 150,000 yen per month and for a graduate is 180,000 yen per month.

Scholarships for Indian Students Accepting Applications from Overseas

Aichi Scholarship Program

This scholarship program is for all of the Asian students including Indians. It is offered by designated schools in Aichi Prefecture. The monthly stipend for scholars is 150,000 yen. The application period is between late January and early May.

Yoshida Scholarship Foundation

Students under the age of 30 years are eligible for this program. The designated field of study for securing this scholarship is Natural Science or Engineering. Successful students will get a monthly stipend of 200,000 yen.

Prefectural University of Kumamoto International Postgraduate Scholarship for Research on Mercury

Students under the age of 35 years are eligible. It's a doctoral/research level program for Prefectural University of Kumamoto with 2 vacancies each year. Scholars will receive a monthly stipend of 150,000 yen plus transportation to/from Japan, and coverage of the entrance fee and tuition fee. The application period is between early May to mid May.
