Job DescriptionIntroductionThe Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome (MLW) Programme (http://www.mlw.mw) is an internationally recognised centre for research and research training, funded by the Wellcome Trust. In collaboration with the Kamuzu University of Health Science (KUHeS), MLW would like to engage the services of a competent and dynamic individual to work in the exciting Research Programme under the OPTIMAL study and the Infectious Diseases Epidemiology Group.Post: Pre-MSc Intern in Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics– 1 post, based in Chikhwawa (initial 1 year [12 months] contract with the possibility of renewal to 1. 5 years [18 months]) ResponsibilitiesJob SummaryThe candidate will join the OPTIMAL study and the Infectious Diseases Epidemiology the group as a junior investigator to conduct research in the field of malaria pharmacology, focusing on optimising dosing of antimalarial medication, called dihydroartemisinin/piperaquine, for malaria prevention in infancy (sub-study 1), and treatment of uncomplicated malaria in young children (<5 years) with acute or chronic malnutrition (sub-study 2).Additionally, the Pre-MSc candidate should show early potential to become a clinician-scientist (i.e. with interest to combine postgraduate clinical specialty- and research training).Preference will be given to candidates interested in specialising in Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (CPT). Based on performance, and depending on the candidate’s interest, they could be supported to become a specialist in CPT through a standalone CPT specialty training program or through dual specialty training (by combining CPT with other specialties such as Paediatrics, Acute-/Intensive Care Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology or General Internal Medicine). With support and mentorship from the group as well as from international collaborators (at University of Cape Town, the University of Liverpool, and Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine), the candidate will be expected to develop a competitive clinical research training fellowship application within the period of their Pre-MSc training. It is envisaged that funding from such a Fellowship would subsequently support their medical specialty training or an MSc degree as a first step in their academic medicine training.OPTIMAL study responsibilities:The candidate will be expected to:Coordinate the study and clinical activities in a multidisciplinary settingPerform internal quality checks for the study data collectedManage, and monitor visits for enrolled study participantsComplete research case report forms (CRFs) and update specific sections of the Investigator Site File.Obtain informed consent and enroll study participantsManage other illnesses of study participants and initiate an appropriate referralCollect specimen according to study protocol, ICH-GCP, Regulatory Authorities and MLW procedures.Contribute some of their time to clinical work at Chikwawa District HospitalRequirementsApplications need to include:An application letter detailing your suitability for this training role, motivation, and career ambition/goal.A detailed curriculum vitae (CV) which should include information on academic performance during undergraduate medical training, and 3 contactable referees.
