Biodiversity Conservation Initiative (BCI) is a non-profit making and locally registered trust under the Trustees Incorporation Act of Malawi based in Mzuzu. Its mission is to support community developmentvthrough conservation and sustainable use of local biological resources. Biodiversity Conservation Initiative has receivedvfunding from the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) through the Development Fundvof Norway (DF) to implement a five-year project (2021– 2025): Scaling Up Climate Adapted Agriculture invMalawi and Mozambique. The aim of the project is to increase the resilience to climate change and well-being of rural communities in Malawi and Mozambique. In Malawi the project is being implemented in Machinga, Ntchisi, Mzimba and Rumphi districts. Biodiversity Conservation Initiative is implementing the project in Rumphi district in Katowo and Mwazisi Extension Planning Areas (EPAs) and Mzimba district in Kazomba and Vibangalala EPA. BCI is, therefore, looking for well-qualified and experienced persons to fill the following positions: PROJECT OFFICER (1) (to be based in Mzimba District) Purpose of the position To coordinate implementation of the MAMO project in Rumphi and Mzimba districts and undertake the following key duties and responsibilities: Key duties and responsibilities Facilitate a process of project planning, budgeting, monitoring and evaluation of activities; Supervise the MAMO project implementation according to planned targets and budgets; In liaison with the Projects Coordinator, review and prepare project reports; Establish a strong link with state and non-state actors on Lead and follower farmer training, conservation agriculture, agroforestry, multiple cropping, integrated pest management, agrobiodiversity conservation, Seed and Food Security, Right to Food and Peoples’ Food Sovereignty; Develop and implement an effective and efficient communication mechanism with all project implementation partners to ensure that plans, reports, correspondences and feedbacks are relayed to key personnel in time; Assess training needs of field project staff and farmers, plan and provide training provisions; Coordinate the implementation and promotion of sustainable agricultural technologies in Katowo and Mwazisi EPAs in Rumphi district and Kazomba and Vibangalala EPAs in Mzimba. Coordinate the implementation of good crop and livestock husbandry in order that farmers must achieve sustainable food and nutrition security through diversified high value foods from both crops and livestock; Coordinate good extension methods to ensure that farmers adopt soil and water conservation technologies; Coordinate veterinary, forestry and health services; Perform any other duties as assigned by the Executive Director from time to time. Qualifications and essential skills Degree in Agriculture with a bias towards Crop Science, Agronomy, Soil science, Horticulture, Extension or other similar fields, with at least three years’ work experience on implementation of climate adaptive agriculture projects and conservation of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture; Good knowledge of climate smart agriculture and Malawi farming systems.; Knowledge of the Malawi agriculture production and farmer led seed systems; Good knowledge of design and implementation of demonstration plots, experimental design and statistical analysis for use in farmer fields; Knowledge of international and national instruments that regulate agrobiodiversity conservation, sustainable use and their equitable sharing of benefits; Hands on knowledge of running Lead farmer extension and training on sustainable agriculture; Good writing and reporting skills; Self-starter and able to work with minimal supervision; Ability to meet deadlines and multiple priorities, and willingness to learn; Good interpersonal skills and ability to motivate others; team player; Computer literacy is a must; and Those with experience working on result oriented-donor projects/programmes will have an added advantage.
