Job Description:
• Our client is seeking a Principal Project Geologist that will be responsible for leading and directly supervising all exploration activities and maintaining in field activities on budget and plan.
• He / She will be responsible for all the BFS activities leading to a mineral resource, reserve and mine plan, including the costing of the mining activities. This includes the coordination of relevant consultants.
• To ensure, in close coordination with other members of the owner’s team, that the BFS represents an achievable and bankable project, completed on-time and on-budget, ready for the next phase (FEED).
• Manage all permitting activities in related to mineral and water exploration, the EISA process and the permits linked to the provision of power and water.
Responsibilities:
• Providing leadership in maintaining a safe and productive work environment for employees and contractors.
• Supervision of mineral exploration activities, including geochemical and geophysical surveys, and drilling programs as and when required.
• Ownership of QA/QC of the various workflows to ensure best quality data is obtained.
• Interpretation of ore resource data across the company and giving management a perspective on the resource position, providing direction with regard to future resources and reserve management.
• Assessment of the ore body and pit geological, geotechnical, hydrotechnical and metallurgical characteristics.
• Managing and supervision of the relevant resource, mining and environmental consultants and resource geologists to access and interpret data.
• Manage and understand all aspects of mine planning, including waste dump and site water management.
• Providing critical inputs to the technical design of the heap-leach operations and related material handling operations.
• Maintain tight financial controls and time management (during the exploration and study phase, and later construction).
• Responsible for the preparation of operating and capital budgets.
• As a member of the owner’s team, full authority to make day-to-day decisions required to deliver key parts of the study, and later the mine plan within budgets and project plans and other parameters agreed with the controlling shareholder.
• Responsible for the selection and management of mining and blasting contractors and related supplies, including trade-off studies.
• Ensure that necessary permits and appropriate procedures are in place to ensure full compliance with laws, regulations and internal environmental, health and safety policies and reporting requirements to governmental authorities.
• Accountable and committed to the maintenance of social license to operate.
• As a member of the owner’s team, report to the board and the peer review group (monthly and on an exception basis as required).
• Process responsibility in exploration and mining pertaining to; Exploration field work, Geotechnical investigations, Pit and site layout and design, Mine planning, including trade-off studies, Mining cost optimisation and Licencing & permitting for mineral and water exploration and mining operations.
Requirements: Qualification and Skill
• 10 + years within a project and operations environment in copper in Africa. Experience in Namibia a big plus and a stint with a consulting firm an added advantage.
• As a minimum, tertiary degree in geoscience.
• Knowledge and experience of the latest geochemical, geophysical and drilling exploration techniques.
• Knowledge of GIS analysis, database compilation and 3D geological modelling.
• Proven ability to successfully work within large projects, budgets and cost controls.
• Must be fluent in written and spoken English. Afrikaans or German an advantage.
