Established in 2009, Rate Pay is Europe’s leading white-label BNPL payment provider. 50% of German shoppers have already paid with RatePay, we manage approx. €4.7 billion in transactions and handle approx. 2.5M transactions per month. Our products include instalment payments with immediate online confirmation, open invoice, direct debit, and prepayment but what makes us different is that we put our consumers totally in control. How? Because we don’t act as a payment “brand” in-between our Merchant or Customers, but rather a technology service.
Through our 350+ commercial partnerships, we take care of payment transactions for many of the largest online shops & payment providers such as Eurowings, About You, PayPal, eBay and more.

Risk Management at Ratepay
Ratepay‘s risk management platform scans hundreds of thousands of transactions per day in order to enable secure payments for our merchants and their customers while also protecting our profitability. We’re at the beginning of a significant platform evolution and for this purpose, Software Engineers, Data Scientists, Data Engineers, Machine learning Engineers and Product Managers closely collaborate in the Risk-engineering tribe to continuously enhance our risk management capabilities by creating new in-house solutions for fraud prevention and credit risk assessment based on state-of-the-art machine learning, data processing, and the integration of third-party providers.

Your Mission
As Head of Engineering of the Risk & Compliance Tribe, you’ll shape and lead the Tribe’s vision to provide a scalable, secure and global Risk & Compliance Platform to enable business growth and meet the needs of our partners and customers.

You will be working closely with your Engineering Manager across a number of teams to ensure the Tribe’s product vision is realised through engineering excellence, encouraging collaboration and knowledge sharing wherever possible. You’ll also work with Principal Engineers, our Director of Engineering, and our CTO to formulate and drive the Technology Strategy of Ratepay – defining domain splits, interactions between teams and platforms, and our approach to scaling.

Your profile

What You’ll Do
• Take ownership of the technology strategy, architecture and roadmap for Risk & Compliance engineering - Accountable for the planning, direction and management of engineering projects that ultimately ensure Risk meets its design & business goals.
• Act as the tip of the spear – You’ll be an SME for leading and guiding high-performance engineering teams, evaluating team efficiency & capability, and working with existing and leaders as a trusted authority for defining and improving engineering standards and best practices.
• Balance short-time and long-term priorities/projects - ensure optimum engineering and business value is achieved. Large involvement in our Greenfield migration from on-prem’ to cloud and ensure Risk is cloud-based for the future, including necessary tooling and services.
• Acts as a subject matter expert within Risk Engineering - draw upon your industry experience to help drive conversations for better problem-solving, awareness and ways of working.
• Serve as a liaison with other teams to ensure Risk & Compliance are represented and the needs of other teams are addressed - Work cross-functionally with Product, BE and FE Engineers, DevOps, Machine learning, Data Science and wider stakeholders

What we need from you
• You’re a seasoned engineer leader with proven experience leading successful teams on multiple occasions. Well-versed in working amongst cross-functional tech teams including Machine Learning, Data Science, DevOps, Product, etc.
• You bring a growth mindset and forward-thinking, open approach to leadership – you inspire and engage your peers and provide direction and clarity in challenging or unclear situations.
• A confident communicator providing vision at all levels – You’re noble, command respect and are able to talk to technical and non-technical stakeholders to unmask ambiguity, instil confidence and influence.
• You have come from a hands-on software engineering background - understand SW Engineering code and concepts and can collaborate with principal engineers on wider challenges
• You’re an innovator, always looking to move the needle and constantly improve
• You have strong experience with cloud platforms (ideally AWS); advantages and disadvantages, on-prem to cloud migration within a complex business and worked with teams on integration and deployments
• You have previously worked on Risk/ Anti-Fraud and/or Compliance products.
• Ideally, you have deep knowledge of Machine Learning/ AI technologies, or at least a good awareness of this domain.
