Under the general direction of the University of Washington School of Nursing (UW SoN) Director of Information Technologies, and as part of the SoN Information Technology Operations team, the Systems Administrator supports the operation of a complex networked computing environment to meet the School's current and emerging information technology needs.

The organizational structure of the UW SoN includes Administrative, Academic, and Support units. The Dean provides strategic direction for the School in conjunction with the Executive Team. The Office of the Dean provides central support to the School through five units: Finance & Administration, the Office of Technology, Learning, and Innovation (OTLI), the Office of Nursing Research, Student and Academic Services, and Advancement. The two academic departments of UW SoN include Biobehavioral Nursing and Health Informatics, and Child, Family, and Population Health Nursing.

This position is a critical member of the UW SoN operations, providing technical expertise in academic, staff, and student IT matters. The Systems Administrator implements best practices and guidelines for all UW SoN IT efforts. The Systems Administrator must stay current with the state of technology to make appropriate recommendations regarding UW SoN IT system maintenance and upgrades. This position requires a commitment to client service, the ability to work collaboratively in a changing environment, and the skills to work with other University community members (faculty, staff, and students) who have diverse technology skills.

The Systems Administrator employs a variety of skills and aptitudes, including a broad technical knowledge, a deep understanding of the School's business needs, and outstanding decision-making abilities. The System Administrator uses these skills to support and further the School's strategic goals.

The Systems Administrator must meet the technology needs of the UW SoN faculty and staff, provide excellent client services and support, maintain maximum uptime, and provide a secure and friendly environment that is conducive to advancing education and research. They provide critical technical support to UW SoN faculty and staff and play a key role in supporting the School's mission and strategic plan. This position must ensure that UW SoN IT initiatives are aligned with the School's Mission, Vision, and strategic direction from the University of Washington Information Technology department (UW-IT).

RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position is supervised by the UW SoN Director of Information Technologies, who directly manages SoN Information Technology Operations and reports to the Assistant Dean of Technology, Learning and Innovation. The Director oversees work assignments on issues related to computing services, information and knowledge management, and other duties based on feedback from the Service Desk, monitoring systems, user feedback, and personal initiative. Work assignments related to curricular support technologies, distance learning, and instructional systems are derived from the Director of Learning Technologies and then assigned by the Director of Information Technology.

The UW SoN's network is primarily composed of Windows servers in Active Directory running in an outsourced virtualization environment. Workstations consist of PC running Windows and Macs running OSX.

Operations

• Leveraging expert-level training and experience, acting as the highest point of technical issue escalation within UW SoN L&IT, the Systems Administrator will analyze and resolve issues with complex systems consisting of servers, workstations, and mobile devices.

• Represent the UW SoN to the University of Washington IT department (UW-IT) unit to manage the UW SoN's needs and responsibilities of analyzing, testing, documenting, and troubleshooting a large and complex network spanning multiple IP subnets and physical locations.

• Design, deploy, monitor, and troubleshoot servers in a hosted IaaS environment to ensure the high-availability of L&IT's core services.

• Develop and maintain operational documentation of core IT servers and services.

• Research, recommend, and implement information management process and procedure best practices to ensure that all UW SoN data is protected through appropriate security, redundancy, and backups.

• Maintain, investigate, design and create remote access services to enable workers.

• Analyze and revise UW SoN's IT systems to ensure they are compliant and consistent with regulations from HIPAA, FERPA, the UW Human Subject Review Board, and the UW Administrative Policy.

• Work closely with the UW SoN IT Sr. Interactive Developer to provide a robust and reliable platform to support the UW SoN's web presence and applications.

Ongoing Service Improvements

• Consult with departments and functional units, analyze their unique business requirements, and design and deploy sustainable infrastructure strategies.

• Consult with our Learning Technologies professionals to design, deploy, and maintain media and web services in support of their mission.

• Using their knowledge of state of the art, and leveraging expert-level experience, the Systems Administrator will migrate existing UW SoN IT systems to cloud-based services that they design, provision, configure, and deploy

Other duties

• Perform other duties as required to support the ongoing mission and strategic plans of the SoN.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field.

• Equivalent combination of experience and education may substitute for the degree requirement.

• At least 4 years of increasing responsibilities while delivering information technology services in a complex environment.

• At least 2 years experience delivering highly available services in a Windows Active Directory environment.

• Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA) or Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE)

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Expertise with Cloud infrastructure services such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, etc.

• Experience designing, provisioning, and deploying IT cloud-based infrastructures

• Expertise in TCP/IP networks including subnetting, DHCP, WINS, DNS and Firewalls.

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

• Ability to work independently.

• Ability to handle confidential information responsibly.

• Ability to manage multiple projects with critical deadlines.

DESIRED REQUIREMENTS:

• Experience working in academic and/or health care IT positions.

• Expertise with the following:

• Federated Authentication using Shibboleth, SAML, ADFS or LDAP.

• Microsoft SQL Server.

• Deploying Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) as an application platform.

• Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) on Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS).

• Supporting Content Management Systems (CMS) such as WordPress and Drupal.

• Using the UW-IT Groups Service tool.

• Working with the UW-IT Delegated OU Service.

• Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).

• Learning Management Systems such as Canvas and Moodle.

• Scripting with PowerShell, VBScript, etc.
