Description: ROLE of the POSITION
The Director of Communications will assist the College of Engineering with developing and implementing a strategic communication and marketing program to build support for the strategic and development missions of the college and position the college as a leader in engineering education, research, and community/industry service. Responsibilities include producing college and department newsletters; student recruitment and donor fundraising collateral; media pitches and releases; website content; event collateral; and social media content.
Reporting to the dean, the Director of Communications will closely work with the Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs, Department Chairs, College's Director of Development, Director of Events, Advising Center, and STEM Admission Counselor to provide communications support for student recruitment, alumni and donor engagement, and the promotion of academic and research activities. The director will work with the Director of Development and Director of Special Events to help with the college’s outreach events as needed.
The director will provide communication support and counsel related to alumni, governmental and community relations activities for the college and will work with the university’s marketing and branding division to coordinate and align communications strategies and tactics.
The director will provide faculty, staff, and administrators with advice and counsel on communication, marketing, and public relations issues.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
This position requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and 3 years of comparable professional experience in the marketing and public relations field, preferably within Higher Education.
The position requires:
1) extensive knowledge of both traditional and more recent communication and marketing strategy and operations
2) strong awareness of relevant issues in the news and community,
3) working knowledge of the operation/function of higher education, engineering education and research, student recruitment, and university advancement and fundraising strategies
4) excellent content strategy, writing and editing skills with the ability to synthesize technical information and present it to appropriate audiences across a variety of platforms under time constraint
5) experience in the production of print and digital materials such as web content, news releases, feature stories, social media content, video scripts, executive leadership messages and talking points, advertising, brochures and other collateral.
6) strong project management and organizational skills with ability to initiate multiple activities and balance priorities based on consultation with the college dean
7) experience working with marketing agencies and overseeing the work of contributors and vendors, including writers, graphic designers, photographers and video production crews.
8) experience in media outreach activities, including pitching stories, developing talking points, and preparing experts for interviews
9) strong interpersonal skills and the ability to cultivate relationships, build trust with internal and external stakeholders, and manage/negotiate competing interests. The director should possess integrity, strong ethical values, and a sense of personal accountability.
10) strong computer skills to utilize a variety of tools including word processing, graphic design, publishing, project management, social media management, stakeholders database management, and mass emailing programs.
11) Experiences with search engine marketing, in both unpaid and paid methods, will be a plus.
