Role Summary

The Associate Financial Accountant supports the financial accounting and reporting team with general ledger accounting functions. The role prepares, organizes, and enters month-end journal entries and analyzes and reconciles general ledger accounts on a monthly basis for Alaska.

The Financial Accountant supports the financial accounting team with general ledger accounting functions by developing solutions to complex journal entries and preparing and analyzing general ledger account reconciliations. This role performs technical accounting research, writes memos documenting conclusions and proper accounting treatment, documents business processes, performs variance fluctuation analysis of profit and loss accounts, and supports requests for ad-hoc projects.

Key Duties

Associate Financial Accountant
• Role supports the Financial Accounting and Reporting team with general ledger accounting functions.
• Prepares, organizes, and enters month-end journal entries.
• Analyzes and reconciles general ledger accounts monthly.
• Assists in the preparation of internal and external reports, such as monthly accounting packages and SEC filings.
• Reviews financial reports for variances and exceptions.
• Provides recommendations to other departments in the application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
• Assists in defining and documenting procedures in adherence with company policy, GAAP, and Sarbanes-Oxley requirements.

Financial Accountant
• Supports the financial accounting teams with general ledger accounting functions by owning complex account reconciliations and related journal entries (e.g. payroll, heavy maintenance, leases, etc.).
• Performs technical accounting research and writes memos documenting conclusions and proper accounting treatment.
• Assists other departments with payroll related research projects on an as-needed basis.
• Assists in the preparation of internal and external reports, such as monthly accounting packages and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filings.
• Continuously improves the account reconciliation process, including identifying automation opportunities to ensure efficiency and promote productivity.
• Performs variance analyses of income statement accounts compared to plan and period-over-period changes in income statement and balance sheet accounts.
• Provides guidance to other divisions in the application of U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP).
• Assists in defining and documenting procedures in adherence with company policy, US GAAP, and Sarbanes-Oxley.
• Identifies and drives process improvement initiatives.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills

Associate Financial Accountant

Required
• Bachelor’s degree with a focus in either accounting, finance, or business administration, or other discipline with an accounting certificate, or 2 years of experience in related discipline or area, in lieu of this degree.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• A self-starter with professional curiosity, specifically in understanding general business practices as well as airline business.
• Ability to meet tight deadlines and prioritize workloads.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule based on business needs.
• Ability to establish priorities and manage multiple talks while seeing work responsibilities through to completion.
• Effective communication skills (e.g., verbal, written, and listening).
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum age of 18.
• Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Financial Accountant

Required
• 2 years of accounting/general ledger experience in an automated environment using financial software (or similar experience).
• Bachelor’s degree, with a focus in accounting or a business-related discipline, or an additional two years of relevant training/experience in lieu of this degree.
• Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam eligibility.
• Demonstrated technical knowledge of accounting procedures and a strong understanding of US GAAP.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Self-starter with natural curiosity to understand general business practices as well as airline specific practices.
• Ability to meet tight deadlines and prioritize workloads under pressure.
• Ability to establish priorities and manage multiple tasks while seeing work responsibilities through to completion.
• Auditing skills, with the ability to research and reconcile complex accounts.
• Advanced Microsoft Office skills (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) with an emphasis on Excel.
• Strong organization and time management skills, with the ability to work cross-divisionally and to act and operate independently with minimal daily direction.
• Strong interpersonal and communication (e.g., verbal, written, presentation) skills.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule based on business needs, including some weekend and non-standard hours.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum age of 18.
• Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
