About Cotopaxi:

Cotopaxi is an outdoor gear brand founded to create sustainably designed products that fight extreme poverty, inspire adventure, and move people to do good. As a certified B Corporation, we believe in using the power of business as a force for social, environmental, and economic good. Our creed, Gear for Good, touches every aspect of our company. Cotopaxi is committed to making all of our gear using recycled, repurposed, or responsible materials by 2025. We allocate 1% of our annual revenue to the Cotopaxi Foundation which awards grants to outstanding nonprofit partners carefully selected for their track records at improving the human condition and alleviating poverty. In 2021, we worked to assist 1 million people experiencing extreme poverty.

Job Overview (What You’ll Do):

Community is the heartbeat of Cotopaxi and central to who we are. As a Community Engagement Manager, you’ll be in charge of building, growing, and engaging with the local community of Cotopaxi enthusiasts where you live. You will have four main areas of responsibility including planning and executing remarkable events, identifying opportunities to support and collaborate with other organizations and their events and activations, strengthening relationships with our wholesale partners, and above all else, finding ways to help us fulfill our mission to do good and make an impact on the local level.

What does that actually look like? Maybe one week you’re working with a local non-profit to sponsor a trail cleanup. The next, you’re hosting a yoga class in our retail store. You might facilitate a local panel on sustainability, give a presentation to the employees of a wholesale partner, or plan a hike, or set up a booth at an outdoors festival. We’ll trust your local knowledge and creative skills so you can bring your own vision to the role, while providing plenty of guidance and support to make sure that you’re successful and that your events are delivering measurable results and growing your community.

The role reports to the Community Engagement Director and will also work closely with the retail store nearby to help them build awareness of our presence and increase in-store visits.

Job Responsibilities (How You’ll Do It):
• Plan a monthly calendar of remarkable, engaging events that highlight Cotopaxi’s brand pillars of adventure, sustainably produced gear, and our mission to do good.
• Build lasting relationships with local organizations, groups, clubs, and nonprofits and find ways to collaborate with them in your community-building efforts.
• Identify key local events (think: festivals, volunteer opportunities, local celebrations) where Cotopaxi should have a presence and negotiate a way to make it happen.
• You're often the only one on the ground, so you'll be the one setting up and staffing a booth at a festival, and the one to take down chairs after the panel discussion.
• Working with the sales and wholesale team, identify local wholesale partners and build relationships with those employees through store visits, clinics, swag drops, or other creative ways to educate them on the brand.
• Create a monthly, quarterly, and annual plan of events and activations that will grow the local Cotopaxi community.
• Create volunteer opportunities for your community, retail store employees, and wholesale partners.
• We swore we’d never use the word “synergy†in a job description, but that’s the best way to describe your relationship with the retail store—you’ll coordinate your efforts together to help them reach their goals, and they’ll support you in yours; over-communication is a must.
• Write witty and engaging emails that inspire your community members (and their friends!) to get involved with Cotopaxi and our mission.
• Work with the social media team and local store employees to curate compelling content for our social media channels.
• Track engagement metrics in order to evaluate what works and what doesn’t; failure and success are both valuable, as long as we’re measuring and improving.
• Figure out the best way to spend your budget, track your expenses, and make adjustments as needed; we’re a small, scrappy, startup-minded team.
