Position available: May 1, 2023

Position Purpose:
• To provide assessment, screening, planning, intervention, evaluation, and/or referrals concerning the health and medical care needs of students for the purpose of minimizing absences due to illness, maximizing educational opportunities, and creating a healthy school climate.

Essential Functions:
• Works collaboratively with health care providers, students' parents, school staff, and community agencies to ensure access and continuity of care for students.
• Assists in the establishment and maintenance of a comprehensive school health program.
• Collects information about the health development status of students for compliance with state immunization regulations and School Board policies.
• Submits required IWAS reports to the state in a timely manner.
• Coordinates school programs of immunization, physical examinations, and vision and hearing testing.
• Performs nursing assessments for students who are ill or injured; applies appropriate theory as a basis for providing first aid, nursing care, intervention, and referrals for these students.
• Implements Diocesan policy with respect to the exclusion and readmission of students in connection with certain infectious and contagious diseases (e.g., Tuberculosis).
• Maintains accurate records and documentation in accordance with state and federal law, and diocesan policies.
• Supervises students as they self-administer prescription or non-prescription medications that must be taken during the school day.
• Maintains accurate logs of medication administration by students and staff members.
• Develops individual health care plans (IHCP) when needed with specific goals, nursing diagnoses, and interventions that delineate school-nursing actions unique to student needs.
• Incorporates this information into the student’s Individual Service Plan (ISP).
• Intervenes as guided by the nursing care plan to implement nursing actions that promote, maintain or restore health, prevent illness, and impact rehabilitation.
• Serves as the designated health care professional on school teams (e.g., Crisis Team, Teacher Assistance Team, etc.)
• Provides guidance and health education to students, parents and employees as necessary.
• Reports to parents, school district personnel, physicians, clinics, and others as needed to meet student health needs.
• Provides instruction and training to school staff regarding the Heimlich Maneuver, Blood Borne Pathogens, the school Emergency plan, and Epi-Pen usage.
• Provides care for students, including students with disabilities.
• Provides medical assessment and wellness programs to school employees as requested.
• Provides health education to students as requested.
• Notifies the appropriate person or agency of student injury/illness in accordance with diocesan and school policies.
• Confers with parents, students and school district professional staff to interpret health and developmental assessments integral to the TAT process.
• Prepares medications for school-sponsored field trips.

Additional Duties:
• Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal or other administrators.

Equipment:
• Uses medical equipment to provide health care to students/staff, including, but not limited to: blood glucose monitors, stethoscopes, and thermometers.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Knowledge and understanding of the tenets of the Roman Catholic Church,
• Ability to maintain a lifestyle, both within and outside of the school environment, that is in full accord with Church teachings.
• Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, symptoms, diagnoses, treatments, first aid, illnesses and injuries, nutrition, and related areas.
• Ability to assess situations and to provide immediate care for ill or injured students or staff members.
• Ability to convey appropriate medical information to school staff or medical professionals to ensure proper maintenance in the school setting.
• Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, the Internet, Outlook, electronic mail).
• Ability to problem-solve job-related issues and to make professional decisions.
• Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals, including students with special needs.
• Ability to follow oral and written orders from supervisors, administrators, physicians, and to coordinate work with the principal, teachers, and others.
• Ability to communicate information regarding health services orally and in writing to a variety of publics,
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with administrators, students, staff, and others contacted in the course of work.

Safety Requirements:
• Adheres to all applicable professional safety standards and practices in the nursing field, including requirements set forth in federal and state law, and Occupational Safety and Health Regulations.
• Follows diocesan procedures regarding Blood Borne Pathogens and all policies regarding the medical or health care of employees and students.
• Maintains confidentiality and shares health information with others as appropriate.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards:
• Works in standard school building environment.
• Possible exposure to body secretions, blood borne pathogens, medicine and medicinal supplies, illnesses and diseases.

Licensure or Certification:
• Applicants must be registered and licensed professional nurses, designated as R.N. as defined and determined by state law.
• Possession of a School Nursing License will be considered.
• As per diocesan confidentiality agreements, relatives of Saint Petronille Catholic School students and staff members and parishioners of Saint Petronille Catholic Church are ineligible for this position.

Working Conditions:

This is a part-time (unbenefited) position. Work hours will not exceed 29 hours / week.
