Instructional Design
The Instructional Design department produces the learning materials that are used in our schools across our communities. This department has team members based in multiple support offices, organized into teams that each work on a portfolio of projects. Driving student achievement through the development of rigorous content is the number one priority. One core tenet of the approach is less lecture (traditional among many schools in our markets) and more student practice. Consistent, rigorous opportunities to refine his or her skills are crucial to a child’s learning progression. The Instructional Design department structures all lessons, textbooks, and other materials to ensure this.

About the Role
• The Instructional Design department at NewGlobe produces thousands of books and tens of thousands of teacher guides, running in 11 different programmes. This department has team members on three continents; this role is based out of our Kigali office.
• The department is in charge of creating all instructional materials, which mostly includes “teacher guides” (daily lessons delivered by e-reader), but also includes textbooks, assessments, and other materials.
• The goal is to develop materials that will help improve learning gains among millions of pupils.
• Up until now, most of our instructional materials have been written in English (with the exception of specific language programmes tailored to each programme). This Managing Editor will lead a new and exciting effort to develop a new instructional programme entirely in French to support upcoming launches in places where French, not English, is the medium of instruction.
• This will include the creation of brand new print and digital materials, the direct translation of existing materials, and a ‘partial translation’ approach for materials that require adaptation.
• As the Managing Editor, you will supervise a large team of deputy managing editors, managers, writers, proofreaders, and translators tasked with creating these materials. In this deadline-driven environment, finding the balance between efficiency and quality is key.
• You’ll need to be comfortable telling your team that they aren’t meeting deadlines, and then help them find a way to do so, all the while ensuring the lessons are excellent. Feedback will reach your team at different intervals, and you’ll need to figure out how to respond to it.
• At times, the projects your team is working on will need to change; your job will be to keep everyone on the same page and steadily moving forward, even when unexpected challenges arise.

Who You Are
• You have years of leadership experience in educational content development and are enthusiastic about the opportunity to leverage those skills to improve the learning experience for millions of children around the world.
• You are an expert people-manager, with a strong background in hiring, managing, supporting, and motivating a large team.
• You are capable of setting thoughtful priorities amidst many competing needs, using effective systems to manage the day-to-day work, and measuring the outcomes of those priorities in order to inform future direction.
• You are also a system-level thinker; you’re constantly obsessing over the types of design principles that can work at scale, and also over the most effective ways to translate these scalable ideas into concrete practices and processes that other individuals and teams can adopt.
• You’re skillful in navigating lateral relationships, capable of giving feedback when something isn’t working for your team and taking feedback in areas where your team could improve.

What You Will Do
• Oversee the creation of world-class instructional materials in French- - everything from multimedia to textbooks to teacher guides -- for Early Childhood, Primary, and Secondary School use
• Hire, train, and lead a team of 50+ people based in Kigali
• Supervise a team of 2 deputy managing editors and 6 managers, who each lead a team of ~7-10 writers, proof-readers, and translators
• Manage the relationship with an external translation firm, including communication on the quality and efficiency of work as well as the management of their workflow
• Set, manage, and measure team priorities and performance using clear and transparent systems
• Identify and build solutions to inefficient processes within the department
• Implement tools and systems to ensure high-quality, error-free product creation
• Collaborate with other leaders within the Academics group to ensure each programme has exactly what it needs to run successfully: eg, which “direct purchase” items fit within the budget and need to be procured for use in the classroom to align with what’s in the teacher guides? eg, precisely which lessons need to run in any given term/course? eg, how should your team apply our design principles in a new subject area
