This is an hourly non-benefited position not to exceed 980 hours per year. This part-time position is scheduled to work approximately 12 hours per week and may require weekends and/or varied shifts. A typical work schedule would be Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, & Sunday - 5 AM to 8 AM. The recruitment is open until a sufficient number of applications are received and may close at any time without prior notice. GENERAL PURPOSE
To ensure the safety of swimmers and enforce regulations at City pools; to assist or conduct instructional swimming classes for children and adults; to perform rescues and administer first aid; and to perform related duties as assigned. This is a journey level position in the Lifeguard series. Incumbents perform lifeguarding tasks and conduct organized swimming instruction. This position requires Water Safety Instruction Certification in addition to all other certifications required of the Lifeguard positions.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Employees in this classification work under direct supervision of the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Supervisor – Aquatics Division and/or the Aquatic Coordinator. Incumbent does not supervise.
• Assist or conduct various instructional swimming classes for children and adults.
• Evaluate the progress of class participants; supervise the activities of swimmers in and around a pool.
• Serve as pool lifeguard.
• Ensure the safety of patrons.
• Respond to emergency situations rapidly and efficiently; perform water rescues; administer first aid, rescue breathing, and CPR as required.
• Ensure that policies, rules and regulations are observed and eliminate all potentially hazardous conditions.
• Rescue persons in distress or persons in danger of drowning.
• Administer first aid in the event of an injury or illness.
• Perform life-saving techniques.
• Respond professionally to public inquiries and concerns.
• Provide information pertaining to the pool regulations, facilities, and programs.
• Maintain records and logs; prepare reports; assist in the operations of swimming pools.
• Perform routine custodial and maintenance tasks.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:

• Pertinent Federal, State, and local codes, laws and regulations.

Ability to:
• Assist or organize and conduct instructional swimming classes for children and adults.
• Maintain safety of class and program participants.
• Administer first aid and life-saving techniques.
• Analyze situations and adopt a quick, effective course of action.
• Monitor assigned area and note any signs of danger.
• Maintain records and logs and write reports.
• Perform lifeguarding duties including water rescues.
• Enforce applicable rules and regulations of the City pool.
• Swim with endurance and proficiency at a level necessary to perform assigned duties.
• Respond to emergency situations and administer first aid, CPR and AED as necessary.
• Work various schedules including weekends, evenings, holidays, and split shifts as required by the work assignment.
• Operate computer equipment and software applications related to assignment.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
• Work with various groups in a tactful and effective manner.
• Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Education & Experience
• Graduation from a high school or GED equivalent is required.
• Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance, supplemented by specialized training in lifeguarding, water safety or a related field.
Licenses, Special Requirements, and Certifications:
• A valid Class “C” California Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record and maintain during the course of employment is required.
• American Red Cross Lifeguard Training American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (title 22) First Aid for Public Safety Personnel and Water Safety Instructor (WSI).
• Emergency Response or EMT certification is acceptable in lieu of Title 22.
• Must be 18 years of age or older at the time of hire.
• Proficiency levels are required at time of interview.
