Residential Support Staff - Diabetes Care

The Residential Support Staff cares for individuals with disabilities in a residential environment. These positions will also work with individuals as champions of our efforts to prevent or effectively treat Diabetes Type 2 (DT2). As part of your educational placement you would partner with support staff and individuals to encourage lifestyle changes that empower health improvement. Locations available in Muskegon, Ottawa and Kent counties.

Essential Functions:Include the following, other duties may be assigned
• Advocates for those served on personal and family level.
• Observes and documents changes in the physical and mental condition of those served
• Administers first aid and simple nursing procedures as needed.
• Ensures the privacy and dignity of those served and reports any suspected abuse or neglect.
• Administers programs to individuals and documents progress, as prescribed.
• Assists in meal preparation, cleaning, small home repairs and light residential maintenance duties.

In addition to assigned duties in the home as a residential support staff you would also be responsible for the following essential functions as part of your educational placement.
• Coaching on diet changes and helping individuals understand why changes are vital (good choices, bad choices and portion control and how to manage behavioral shifts)
• Increase exercise opportunities and partner with the individual to complete
• Coaching to support good food & portion control decisions in the community (shopping or eating out)
• Advocates with health care providers to prevent development of DT2 and/or treat for DT2 and other health care concerns that place them at risk for development of DT2.
• Provide education about health care disparities for individual served in the mental health system and work to decrease the disparities.
• Reporting to a psychiatrist on mental health system management and health care concerns related to medications.
• Negotiating changes that support prevention or improve management of DT2.

Minimum requirements

Must be 18, pursuing a healthcare degree (nursing, dietary, PA, pre-med) and have a valid driver's license.
