Detail Pekerjaan

Global Affairs (UVA Global) at the University of Virginia seeks a strategic, collaborative, and innovative leader to serve as Director of Global Initiatives. Reporting directly to the Vice Provost for Global Affairs, Ambassador Stephen Mull, in the Office of the Provost, the Director will lead the expansion of UVA’s global presence with new offices strategically located across the globe. This role will also oversee several aspects of globalization on the UVA Grounds by supporting faculty who are globalizing their courses through the “Global Classroom” initiative, shepherding the process to welcome guest international practitioners to the University, and partnering with scholars-at risk programs to identify and support temporary faculty appointments.

The Director will join the University at a time of excitement, opportunity, and a shared sense of purpose. UVA’s president, James E. Ryan, and Provost, Ian Baucom, envision UVA as a preeminent university that prepares students as servant-leaders in a diverse and globally connected world. This charge is enmeshed in the results and impact the Director will deliver, and the Director’s role is central to implementing key pieces of UVA’s vision around global expansion. Increasing UVA’s international footprint will amplify the ways in which our institution approaches learning as an opportunity for discovery and will facilitate pathways for our faculty and students to become international leaders in distinct and critical research areas. Therefore, a successful candidate will possess the experience necessary to manage a broad portfolio of activities that span both strategy and operations.

Initially, the Director’s primary focus will be launching three UVA offices in South Asia, the United Kingdom, and Africa. This will require the incumbent to rely on legal advice in each location and to identify real estate firms, understand tax implications, and oversee the inaugural staffing of each office. Once established, these global offices will primarily (1) work alongside the International Studies Office to develop new and innovative education abroad offerings, (2) provide a platform to support faculty international scholarly teaching and research, (3) support recruitment of international students from those regions, and (4) facilitate opportunities for alumni engagement.

In addition, the Director will manage on-Grounds initiatives in collaboration with the UVA Global team, the International Studies Office, and schools and faculty across the University. The Director will work closely with Vice Provost Mull in representing the best interests of UVA’s global strategy in a variety of settings and will collaborate with the development team to identify and source long-term funding streams for UVA Global initiatives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Work with the Vice Provost for Global Affairs, the International Studies Office, and other University components to develop and implement business plans for the expansion of UVA’s overseas presence through the establishment of hub offices in key overseas locations such as South Asia, Africa, Europe, and elsewhere that will focus on development of education abroad programs, support for UVA research, student recruitment, and alumni engagement.
• Develop, implement, and administer UVA’s “Global Classroom” initiative, a small grants program that provides faculty with funds to globalize undergraduate classroom content on Grounds, including through guest international practitioners, globally oriented research support, community engagement/field trips, and other appropriate activities, with the advice of a faculty-led Global Classroom advisory committee.
• Engage with University Advancement and the Vice Provost for Global Affairs in developing philanthropic support for the University’s global initiatives.
• Collaborate with the International Studies Office, Center for Global Inquiry and Innovation, Global Studies program, and Center for Global Health Equity in developing undergraduate globally oriented experiences blending pedagogy, research, and inquiry.
• Serve as the University’s lead in partnering with international scholars-at-risk programs to identify, recruit, and support promising candidates for temporary appointments to UVA faculty positions.
• Explore and develop ideas for further globalizing UVA’s on-Grounds undergraduate academic experience.

Strong candidates will be highly organized and detail oriented, possess excellent communication skills, and show experience driving continuous improvement and providing excellent service. This role will require the ability to operationalize and implement policy and lead and manage complex projects within unique political and cultural contexts of work. Candidates should show demonstrated success building and maintaining a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment that supports direct reports and all colleagues.
