Primary Purpose

The Animal Welfare and Biosecurity Specialist will audit, validate and report compliance with Mountaire's Animal Welfare requirements using the National Chicken Council’s audit toolkit as well as ensure we meet Mountaire Farm's biosecurity standards. These actions will require interactions across all areas where live birds are present in the system. The position will also be responsible for training Mountaire employees, contract crews, contract growers, and their hired farm laborers on proper animal welfare and biosecurity techniques and protocol following those provided through the National Chicken Council and NPIP (Natural Poultry Improvement Plan) standards.

Major Duties & Responsibilities
• Biosecurity Auditing - Using Mountaire Farms Biosecurity Audit Tools to evaluate the biosecurity status of our system. Provide feedback for areas of concern and opportunities for improvement to Management and Veterinary Staff. Animal Welfare Auditing – following National Chicken Council audit protocol - monthly reviews of each functional area (Hatchery, Grow Out, Catch Crews, Contract farms); quarterly audits with reports. Communicate results, including non-conformance to Manager and functional area Manager.
• Training Mountaire Employees and Contractors who are in contact with live poultry on Welfare Policy. Training will be part of the onboarding process and annually in coordination with Management and Veterinarians.
• Reporting on Welfare and Biosecurity Concerns – reporting on all monthly reviews and quarterly audits. Non-conformance and recommendation to veterinary staff, manager, and directors of Live Operations.
• Investigating Welfare Claims and Biosecurity Breaches– responsible for investigating animal welfare claims/complaints. Report findings back to staff veterinarians and manager for follow-up action as needed .
• Research novel approaches to improve system biosecurity and welfare. Help in the planning, implementation and reporting of trial work focused on advancing our system in the area of biosecurity and welfare while still keeping our competitive advantage.

Qualifications
• Minimum Bachelor's degree in Poultry or Animal Science, or equivalence.
• 5 years in poultry production management experience desired.
• Previous audit experience preferred. Working knowledge of National Chicken Council Animal Welfare Guidelines and audit protocol desired).
• Current PACCO (Professional Animal Care Council Certificate Organization) or ability to obtain-required.
• Effective communication skills – both written and verbal.
• Skilled in document organization with excellent attention to detail.
• Bilingual – the ability to speak and/or understand Spanish preferred.
