Advertised Job Duties
Under general direction, leads the federally funded Small Business Development Center to promote development of small business in the Virgin Islands. Advocates interests of small business; conducts research on small business development; writes publications; provides training and technical assistance for small businesses.
Lead program. Define strategic goals and objectives. Develop and interpret policies and procedures. Set standards, develop and manage key performance metrics. Develop new programs.
Manage budget. Writs grants proposals. Prepare annual budget request. Set fees. Control expenditures in accordance with the approved budget Approve purchase orders and service contracts.
Supervise Staff. Select and train staff. Plan schedules and assigns duties and responsibilities. Evaluate work and counsel employees in ways to improve performance. Initiate disciplinary action. Approve timecards and leave requests. Advocate SBDC interests. Draft legislation and regulations to stimulate growth of small business in the Virgin Islands. Present ideas to Legislature and other government agencies on ways to promote interests of small business in the Virgin Islands.
Oversee research and information access: Develop organizational abilities to conduct surveys and library research on small business development. Identify new industries that might be successful in the Virgin Islands. Monitor small business development. Assemble bibliographies, directories, and other lists. Identify patterns and trends.
Oversee training programs. Supervise all related functions in regards to the planning and organizing of workshops and training courses provided by SBDC. Serve as instructor when needed. Provide talks to business groups, community organizations, schools and university in topics related to small business services. Collect fees, if applicable.
Oversee technical advisement. Develop organizational abilities to diagnose needs and counsel small businesses in areas of finance, business law, marketing, production, facilities, inventory, accounting, personnel, and other related areas, and to assist in start-up and on-going operations of small businesses.
Coordinate SBDC program activities with other University units, outside government agencies, non-profit agencies, and other organizations as appropriate in order to efficiently provide services to the Virgin Islands small business community.
Function as the SBDC champion to outside constituents including businesses, financial institutions, government agencies and the community at large. Promote the SBDC to these entities, routinely engaging in interactions and public speaking engagements with these requisite organizations and individuals.
