Detail Pekerjaan

The Fraunhofer ITWM is one of currently 76 institutes of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e.V. (Fraunhofer Society for the Advancement of Applied Research) and can thus draw on the competencies of a strong network. We, the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM, see it as our task to further develop key technologies, to give innovative impulses, and to implement them in practice together with industrial partners.
Currently, the joint project Quantum Initiative Rhineland-Palatinate (QUIP) of the Rhineland-Palatinate Technical University Kaiserslautern-Landau (RPTU), the Fraunhofer ITWM, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) and the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) is running. It aims to sustainably strengthen quantum technology in Rhineland-Palatinate.

The project funds quantum computing-related internships for Bachelor or Master students from outside of Rhineland-Palatinate at the Fraunhofer ITWM Kaiserslautern from 2023.

What you will do

Quantum computing (QC) is currently a very dynamic field of research that is expected to lead to groundbreaking innovations in various application areas, especially in cryptography, but also in financial mathematics, the simulation of material and component properties, or the quality assurance and optimization of production processes. With QC, both memory requirements and computation time can theoretically be reduced exponentially. We are investigating how to combine classical methods, which are already widely used to solve mathematical problems, with the advantages of QC. Our goal is to complement classical methods with QC.

The internship can start flexibly and lasts between one and three months.

The research topics are defined by the individual QC working groups at Fraunhofer ITWM and cover the areas of quantum chemistry, optimization, finance and energy economics, material simulation, quantum image processing, quantum machine learning.

What you bring to the table
• You are studying a STEM subject in your Bachelor's or Master's degree, e.g. mathematics, computer science, physics or similar.
• You are studying at a university outside of Rhineland-Palatinate, preferably abroad.
• Basic knowledge in quantum computing or the willingness to acquire it as well as programming experience in Python and the willingness to learn new concepts/programming methods (Qiskit from IBM

Please send us your complete application documents including cover letter, CV and current status of your studies. Also important for us are your desired start date, duration and the topic you are interested in.

What you can expect
• You will work in a dynamic, multidisciplinary team on exciting and current topics in the field of quantum computing
• You will be professionally supervised and can participate in a current research project
• Flat hierarchies and open communication provide the ideal environment for your scientific career

The position will be part-time.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.

Interested? Apply online now. We look forward to getting to know you!
