Purpose of the Role:
Act as a direct link with the customer and manage blasting operations and performance to obtain the optimal blast outcome.
To provide the necessary support to the team and identify and rectify gaps that may arise occasionally.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• To develop and test blasting optimisation, to provide the highest quality blasting products and services available
• To conduct and manage blasting risk assessments, blast optimisation designs, blast performance results, specialist blast designs, and numerical modelling for critical blasts and submit relevant reports to ensure that all the requirements of the Mine Health and Safety Act, OHS Act, and statutory requirements within the department/remit thus ensuring effective management of SHERQ and adherence to stipulated disciplines for continuous improvement of occupational Safety, Health, Environment, Risk and Quality that impact on any organisation
• To stay abreast of global technical advances in blasting and develop and implement policies, procedures and processes to ensure process excellence and continuous improvement
• To assist in providing advanced technical training for blasting engineers and clients
• To perform and report on annual business planning, thus ensuring efficient and effective management of finances and employees and assisting in such a manner as to accomplish the organisation’s objectives
• To compile and execute business and marketing strategy, thus ensuring new business for the organisation
• • To effectively manage the operational service delivery value chain through activities to create and build value with the organisational vision at every step
• To effectively manage stock to obtain and preserve a suitable assortment of goods while keeping track of all orders, shipping, storage, handling and other related costs
• To ensure that all the requirements of the Mine Health and Safety Act, OHS Act, and statutory requirements within the department/remit, thus ensuring effective management of SHERQ and adherence to stipulated disciplines for continuous improvement of occupational Safety, Health, Environment, Risk and Quality that impact on any organisation
• To manage all aspects of human capital through the HR value chain and by legislation
• To ensure efficient and effective management of finances in such a manner as to accomplish the strategic objectives of the organisation
• To effectively manage the maintenance of equipment, vehicles and assets, thus ensuring adherence to processes and procedures
• To identify, implement and manage employee development and skills transfer through various onboarding and training initiatives
• To define, develop and implement policies, procedures and processes to ensure process excellence and continual improvement
Knowledge and Experience:
• 7+ years demonstrated experience in mining, drilling and blasting environment (blasting operations)
• At least 3+ years on the job experience in a senior blasting role
Skills and Attributes:
• Project Management
• Operations support
• Sound knowledge of applicable blasting software
• Sound knowledge of Digital Initiation Systems
• Sound knowledge of numerical modelling and field monitoring techniques
• Sound understanding of blasting physics and SHERQ
• Extensive knowledge of mining operations
• Good working knowledge of the explosive regulations
• Project management and Commercial knowledge
• Technical knowledge of mining explosives and services
Educational Qualifications:
• Diploma (Electrical/Electronic Engineering) or relevant qualification and Trade Test
• Opencast Mines Blasting Certificate of Competency
• Explosives/Blasting Engineer or relevant certification/diploma
• AET (Academy of Explosives Technology) Advance Certificate
• Safety-related courses are an added advantage
