Position Summary
The Seasonal Deckhand position is under the direct supervision of the Captain. The deckhand’s primary function is the safety of passengers and the vessel. Deckhands hold responsibility for knowing and being able to execute all safety drills and procedures, and hold additional responsibility for assisting with the daily operations and maintenance of the boat. These duties including: delivery of the cruise narration while underway, passenger care and assistance, and operating the onboard café. This position works with the Captain to execute daily and weekly maintenance and ensures the general upkeep and maintenance of the vessel is of the highest standard. The deckhands work collaboratively with other museum staff to maintain cohesion between the boat and other museum departments.
Essential Job Functions
• Responsible for the safety and wellbeing of passengers, shipmates, and the vessels • Have working knowledge on proper use of all safety equipment on the boat, demonstrate competency and appropriate line-handling skills, and knows and understands appropriate steps and what to do in situations that may jeopardize the vessel’s safety and security • Understand and perform all required safety drills, working as a team with shipmates to handle situations as they arise
• Responsible for day to day operational functions of the vessels including: daily housekeeping, general maintenance and upkeep, ticket collection, underway procedures, conducting historical narrations, assisting guests, and alcohol and concession sales at the onboard café
• Conducting pre-departure safety talk / demonstration
• Working with, and following direction from, Captain
• Other duties and responsibilities as required
Qualifications
• Due to alcohol service, qualified candidates must be age 21 or over
• Must have or be able to obtain First Aid / CPR certification
• Physically able to conduct all required safety drills and procedures
• Comfortable with public speaking and have the ability to learn and present local history
• Friendly outgoing personality with solid customer relation skills
• Must pass pre-hire drug screening and enrollment in random testing program
• Must be able to lift 80 pounds
• Familiarity with local waters including Kennebec River, Sasanoa River, Boothbay Harbor, and Merrymeeting Bay a plus
Terms and Application
The Deckhand position is part-time / seasonal, working up to a 40-hour week. $16 / hour.
