Job Description

The American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC) in Sint Maarten (SXM), Dutch Antilles invites applications and nominations for the position of Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, Sint Maarten campus.

This position reports to the Senior Associate Dean for Student Affairs and serves as the senior administrative official on the SXM Campus responsible for the quality of student life. The administrative leader in this position is responsible for oversight of numerous critical, non-academic student activities such as, but not limited to:
• New student orientation and assimilation to life in Sint Maarten
• Promotion of the student experience on the SXM Campus
• Maintenance and adherence to expectation for a safe and professional school environment
• Management of student professionalism issues
• Participant in management of student conduct complaints
• Member of the Sint Maarten Campus Disaster Response Team
• Liaison to the SXM Council of the Student Government Association

As the SXM Campus’ top student affairs administrator, this position is involved in planning, budgeting, and implementing the University’s mission and goals through the TEACH values (Teamwork, Energy, Accountability, Community, and Heart).

Founded in 1978, AUC is one of the highest performing and well-respected Caribbean-based accredited medical schools. Located on the beautiful Dutch and French island of St. Maarten, AUC’s American curriculum provides an outstanding medical education to highly qualified graduate students of diverse background. AUC’s ~1600 medical students are principally from the US and Canada. AUC’s high educational goals are accomplished within an atmosphere of academic excellence, which fosters the highest standards in medical professional competence, humanism, and ethics.

Located on a rapidly growing, modern, and state of the art campus, AUC’s SXM safe and secure environment. The Assistant Dean for Student Affairs will lead AUC’s Campus student support team by encouraging and fostering an environment that advances the culture of caring and collaboration based on collective success, student engagement and social accountability, and student preparation for medical licensure examinations, postgraduate training, and ultimately medical practice. Students’ learning outcomes and Campus experiences are key measures of success.

AUC is seeking candidates who are dynamic individuals with strong leadership skills and a record of demonstrated achievement. The successful candidate should have a record of progressively increasing supervisory experience. The position requires excellent oral, written, interpersonal, and organizational skills to successfully engage collaboratively with students, staff, faculty, parents, and the local community. The successful candidate will possess a student-centric approach with the ability to effectively deal with student issues and to work formally and informally with students as an administrative professional and leader who is capable of building consensus and buy-in across student groups and academic departments. AUC is seeking leaders with an interest in and commitment to the values of cultural and ethnic diversity and inclusion, community involvement, internationalization, and collaboration with other high performing peers in the academe.

The minimum requirements for the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs are five years of broad and historically expanding relevant experiences, along with a terminal degree in a relevant field. Special consideration given to candidates with experience in health education settings, e.g., colleges of medicine, dentistry, or nursing.

Sint Maarten is a 37-square-mile Caribbean island located about 150 miles from Puerto Rico with daily nonstop flights to and from the United States. English is spoken everywhere on the island, and the US dollar is an accepted currency. The Dutch side of the island, Sint Maarten, became an independent country on October 10, 2010 and is one of four constituent countries that form the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The French part of the island, Collectivite’ de Saint-Martin, is an overseas territory of France. Sint Maarten boasts pristine beaches, excellent diving opportunities, sailing and sports activities, movie theaters, more than 400 restaurants, duty-free shopping, and art and music from around the world.

Responsibilities
• Oversee all medical sciences student affairs programs, policies, procedures, and practices that foster and promote student learning, retention, and success
• Directly responsible for achieving expected response rate and engagement scores on University’s annual Student Engagement Survey
• Manage all non-academic student conduct issues to ensure professionalism and behavioral standards are upheld
• Advises students regarding non-academic policies, procedures, and practices in the Student Handbook
• With the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Faculty Senate, develops strategic initiatives to enhance the student experience inside and outside the classroom
• Promotes professional growth of students by leading actions reflecting professional values, ethics, and demeanor
• Maintain student non-academic performance records and make them available for administrative or accreditation activities
• Serves as AUC’s representative in responding to student emergencies 24/7
• As needed, promptly respond to student crises indifferent of the location located. (i.e. hospital, police station or any other supervised professional setting in which student is situated)
• Oversee Sint Maarten (SXM) Campus’s student drug testing program
• Direct the planning and execution of the White Coat Ceremony and New Student Orientation program.. Identify and manage the Student Orientation Advisors
• Act as Administrative Liaison to the SXM Council of the Student Government Association and represent AUC at their weekly general meetings and at the monthly Executive SGA Meeting
• Serve as Administrative Liaison to the Student Judiciary Committee.
• With their faculty advisors, oversee all SXM campus-based, student organizations such as Specialty Interest Groups to ensure their function is in concert with AUC policies, procedures, and practices
• With input from the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, review and approve all requests for Short-term and Long-term Leaves of Absence and Step 1 Academic Leave extensions
• Oversee the functioning of the Medical Sciences Academic Support (MSAS) Board
• Initiates processes to expedite the resolution of student problems through informal mediation, academic appeal, or faculty or administrative channels.
• Serve as Complaint Coordinator for student conduct complaint processes and ensure alignment with AUC administrative review policies and procedures.
• Serve on the SXM campus Disaster Preparedness Committee including shelter management in the event of a local disaster and/or duties as assigned by the Director of Campus Operations
• Serves as the chief FERPA/HIPAA and ADA information and compliance liaison. Be responsible for dissemination of policies related to sexual harassment, anti-hazing, substance abuse and other issues related to safety, health and wellbeing of students
• Review all requests related to the Religious Exemptions, and University Housing Waivers of Late-Fees related to registration
• Act as a student advocate for students’ needs and concerns with faculty and administration and serve on the Campus Leadership Teams; attend Semester Leads meetings, Academic and Student Affairs meetings, and other meetings as assigned.
• With input from the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, review and approve all requests for withdrawal from the University in compliance with AUC policy. Conduct exit counseling with withdrawing students
• Collaborates with the Senior Associate Dean for Student Affairs to promote student success throughout the 4-year program and particularly around the transition from medical sciences to clinical sciences.
• In collaboration with the Senior Associate Dean for Student Affairs, oversees and manages budgets for SXM Campus Office of Student Affairs
• Provides supervision and guidance to the Manager of Student Affairs, Coordinator for Student Life, and Office of Student Affairs Administrative Assistant. Complete annual performance reviews and assist in development and completion of annual performance goals and expectations. Promote the professional development of all direct reports.
• Assist in AUC student, faculty, and staff recruitment
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Senior Associate Dean for Student Affairs

Qualifications
• A minimum of five years of broad and historically expanding relevant experiences
• Terminal degree in a relevant field, such as PhD, MD or PsyD
• Special consideration given to candidates with experience in health education settings, such as colleges of medicine, dentistry, or nursing
• Strong leadership skills and record of demonstrated achievement
• Record of progressively increasing supervisory experience
• Excellent oral, written, interpersonal and organization skills
• Prior experience in the following areas preferred:

- Campus Leadership

- Student engagement
