Job Description

The American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC) in Sint Maarten (SXM), Dutch Antilles invites applications and nominations for the position of Associate Dean, Academic Affairs. This position reports to the Senior Associate Dean, Academic and Student Affairs (who is a member of the University's Executive Leadership Council).

The colleague in this position is responsible for providing strong, dynamic leadership, and for fostering an academic environment which encourages scholarship, teaching, and learning excellence through oversight of critical academic activities as well as direct teaching responsibilities. Key administrative activities include, but are not limited to, review and refinement of academic policies, including criteria for student progression/promotion; management of master course/calendar scheduling; and development of off-track student academic plans. This leader serves as a close advisor to the Senior Associate Dean, Academic & Student Affairs in matters related to accreditation and new program development. As a Sint Maarten Campus administrative leader, this person is involved in planning, budgeting, and implementing the University's mission and goals through the TEACH values (Teamwork, Energy, Accountability, Community, and Heart).

Founded in 1978, AUC is one of the highest performing and well respected Caribbean-based accredited medical schools. Its flagship medical sciences campus is located on the beautiful Dutch and French island of Sint Maarten. AUC's American curriculum provides an outstanding medical education to qualified students of diverse background. AUC's ~1600 medical students are principally from the US and Canada with an increasingly global student body. AUC's educational goals are accomplished within an atmosphere of academic excellence, which fosters the highest standards in medical professional competence, humanism, and ethics.

Located on a rapidly growing, modern, and state of the art campus, AUC's SXM Campus is comprised of over 35 full-time faculty members and 125 staff in a highly safe and secure environment. The Associate Dean, Academic Affairs will lead AUC's Sint Maarten campus academic efforts by encouraging and fostering an environment that advances the culture of caring and collaboration based on collective success, student engagement and social accountability, and by preparing students for medical licensure examinations, postgraduate training, and ultimately medical practice. Students' learning outcomes and their Campus academic experiences are key measures of success.

AUC is seeking candidates who are dynamic individuals with strong leadership skills and a record of demonstrated achievement. The successful candidate should have a record of progressively increasing supervisory experience. The position requires excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, and organizational skills to successfully engage with students, staff, faculty, and the local community. The successful candidate will possess the ability to effectively deal with student issues and to work formally and informally with faculty and students as an administrative professional and leader. AUC is seeking leaders with an interest in and commitment to the values of cultural and ethnic diversity and inclusion, community involvement, internationalization, and collaboration with other high performing peers in the academe.

The minimum requirements for the Associate Dean, Academic Affairs – Sint Maarten campus are ten years of broad and historically expanding relevant experiences, along with a terminal degree in a relevant field. Special consideration will be given to candidates with experience in health education settings, e.g., colleges of medicine, dentistry, or nursing, especially those who have worked directly to teach and mentor medical students.

Sint Maarten is a 37-square-mile Caribbean island located about 150 miles from Puerto Rico with daily nonstop flights to and from the United States and Europe. English is spoken everywhere on the island, and the US dollar is an accepted currency. The Dutch side of the island, Sint Maarten, became an independent country on October 10, 2010 and is one of four constituent countries that form the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The French part of the island, Collectivite' de Saint-Martin, is an overseas territory of France. Sint Maarten boasts pristine beaches, excellent diving opportunities, sailing and sports activities, movie theaters, more than 400 restaurants, duty-free shopping, and art and music from around the world.

Responsibilities
• Administrative responsibilities (70%):
• Oversees and manages Academic Affairs including staff and budget
• Provides timely, accurate information for all accreditation and approval processes
• Serves as a champion and leader during AUC’s transformation to a multi-campus international medical school
• Works in close collaboration with a Preston-campus counterpart to ensure academic alignment across campuses
• Maintains the academic Master Schedule and Course Schedules for the Sint Maarten campus
• Contributes to the development and maintenance of the Student Handbook
• Reviews and updates academic policies related to medical science students, including criteria for student promotion
• Advises students regarding academic policies, procedures, and practices
• Assists in implementation of Student Orientation, graduation, white coat ceremonies, and the Dean’s List programs
• Constructs academic plans for off-cycle and transfer students to facilitate progression through the program
• Manages the testing center and ensures ongoing compliance with NBME testing procedures
• With campus leaders, assesses and documents students’ learning outcomes and implements improvement programs
• With key stakeholders, develops strategic initiatives to enhance students’ academic experiences and outcomes inside and outside the classroom
• Community and campus affairs (15%):
• Engages with appropriate stakeholders to develop service learning, research, and community education programs
• Serves on various medical sciences campus committees
• Other (15%):
• Direct teaching of medical sciences students
• Performs other duties as assigned
• Complies with all policies and standards

Qualifications
• Terminal degree in a relevant field, such as PhD, MD, or EdD from an accredited college or university. Required
• 10 years of broad and historically expanding relevant experiences Required
• Direct experience with US Med school curriculum required
• Record of progressively increasing supervisory experience Required
• Strong leadership skills and record of demonstrated achievement
• Understand the mission and values of AUC and the ability to effectively support and communicate them to internal and external audiences
• Knowledge of standards and trends in international medical education including faculty and student affairs
• Knowledge of medical school curriculum
• Excellent oral, written, interpersonal and organizational skills
• Special consideration will be given to candidates with experience in health education settings, such as colleges of medicine, dentistry, or nursing
• Demonstrated ability to develop and administer an academic budget and to establish and monitor fiscal accountability within the areas of responsibility
• Established ability to work with a highly diverse staff, faculty, and student body
• Aptitude to excel in a demanding, outcome-oriented, and dynamic work environment
• Evidence of the use of digital technology in higher education
• Highly collaborative with proven experience working within a matrix organization
