The University of Virginia’s (UVA)University Advancement Communications team seeks applications for a writer to join our team in conceptualizing, writing, and editing compelling content for our audiences.

University Advancement (UA) Communications defines and models the voice of philanthropy at UVA. Working for the Vice President of Advancement, the UA Communications department writes, designs produces, and assesses the impact of fundraising communications in all media, including print, video, and online content.

The department is in the middle of a major, five-year, $5 billion fundraising campaign for the University of Virginia that will conclude in 2025. To support campaign fundraising and promote messaging about the campaign’s widespread impact, advancement communications is seeking a creative and experienced professional to serve as a writer and collaborative team member.

This writer will work in partnership with UA staff and others across the University to produce gift announcements, stories, and fundraising-related content-print and digital. As part of the UA Communications team that produces the campaign magazine, Envision, and its digital monthly version, this position will write stories and announcements about the donors, who generously give to the University, students, and faculty who have benefited from that support, and the initiatives that require private support to achieve the goals of UVA’s strategic 2030 plan.

In this position, the writer will work closely with the UA Communications team to ensure content strategy aligns with University Advancement priorities and goals. In addition, the writer will support University Advancement by helping develop content and strategies to highlight the benefits of private support at UVA. This position requires someone with expert storytelling skills, interview skills, writing, and editing experience. Attention to detail and proofreading skills are also necessary. The writer will work closely with the Director of Content Production and the University Advancement Communications staff and report to the Senior News Writer and Editor to maximize story effectiveness, promote distribution, and media placement.

Responsibilities include:
• Identify and write Envision features to support UVA’s fundraising goals, including those focused on donor profiles, student experience, faculty teaching and research, capital projects, and other projects
• Assist the Senior News Writer and Editor with producing gift announcements
• Write and edit stewardship communications for donors
• Create content that demonstrates the transformational power of philanthropy at UVA and excites our audiences
• Monitor, edit, and update content on the Giving website
• Write copy for cultivating donors as well as write and edit proposals for donors
• Lead the writing and editing of University Advancement award submissions

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and at least three years of previous experience in a communications, public relations or related field

Demonstrated experience producing and editing multiple storytelling formats and modes, including basic news, features, reports, magazine and/or newsletter writing

Excellent copy editing and proofreading skills; AP Style Guide expertise preferred

Proficiency with MS Office programs, PC or Mac desktop computers

Must have excellent collaborative and interpersonal skills, exceptional communication skills, a high degree of personal integrity and respect for others

Experience in working as part of a creative team

An excellent listener, who can give, receive, and readily assimilate constructive feedback

Ability to translate the University’s educational mission, strategic aims and programs into persuasive communications

This position is hybrid located within one hour of Charlottesville, VA.

Anticipated hiring range: $55-$65K / year

This position will remain open until filled. This is an Exempt level, benefited position. This position will not sponsor applicants for work visas. PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
