Birchfield School is an independent preparatory and senior school for boys and girls aged 4-13 located in a rural setting in Albrighton, Shropshire and is a member of IAPS and ISA.

We are extending our senior school offering to Year 11 - our first Year 9 cohort joins the school in September 2023.

We are seeking to appoint a suitably qualified teacher with a specialism in Music to teach pupils across Early Years to Key Stage Three. The role covers 2 days per week with further hours possible for candidates able to teach other subject areas. Music peripatetic teaching opportunities are also available.

Closing Date: March 14th at 9am

Interviews will take place in the week starting Monday, 21st March

Purpose of the Role

● Lead the development, management and strategic direction of the department

● Be accountable for raising pupil/student achievement in the department

● Support the development of extra-curricular music throughout the school, ensuring a high level of good quality participation by a wide range of pupils.

Responsibilities

● Plan and teach all curriculum music lessons from Early Years to Year 8 and take responsibility for the management of the music department, communicating and implementing information and good practice.

● Work in partnership with the Headmistress to oversee the recruitment of highly qualified peripatetic teachers

● Line manage, monitor and have full responsibility for the team of visiting instrumental teachers and be responsible for the strategic development of instrumental music provision

● Be accountable for, and ensure the smooth day to day running of, all aspects of instrumental tuition including the timetabling of all individual music tuition

● Be accountable for instrumental purchase, hire and maintenance

● Co-ordinate and manage external music examinations

● Accompany pupils and ensembles within the department as required

● Ensure a high level of instrumental and choral provision, working with staff running the school choirs

● Liaise closely with the Events Coordinator for the department to help organise concerts and musical performances within the school and in the wider community

● Arrange workshops and for visits into school which support the teaching and learning of Music.

● Play the piano for school assemblies, as needed, and organising hymn choice

● Lead weekly hymn practices across the school

● Provide musical direction and assistance for dramatic productions/nativities in the school as

required

General

● Use ICT effectively within the curriculum to enhance teaching and learning

● Set a good example to children through presentation, personal appearance and conduct

● Attend all INSET, staff meetings, parents’ evenings, Open Mornings and CPD as required

● Establish effective, professional working relationships with colleagues

● Contribute to departmental activity beyond the curriculum

Person Specification - Essential / Desirable

A fully qualified teacher with relevant school experience - Essential.

Experience of teaching pupils across the Early Years to senior year groups - Essential.

A specialism and related qualifications in Music - Essential.

An ability to contribute to other subjects - Desirable.

Expertise in piano playing and teaching - Desirable.

The ability to communicate effectively with pupils of all abilities and motivate them through innovation and technique - Essential.

Excellent organisation, time management, communication and interpersonal skills- Essential.

Attention to detail and pride in meeting deadlines - Essential.

Strong skills in assessment and use of data to maximise pupil progress - Essential.

Success in personalising learning to meet pupil needs - Essential.

Strong ICT skills - Essential.

The ability to work autonomously and as part of a team - Essential.

An adaptable and professional approach - Essential

Experience of working in and managing a small team - Desirable.
