The American Littoral Society is a nonprofit, membership-based organization headquartered on Sandy Hook in Highlands, NJ. The American Littoral Society promotes the study and conservation of marine life and habitat, protects the coast from harm, and empowers others to do the same. We are offering two summer internship opportunities based out of Sandy Hook National Recreation Area in Highlands New Jersey.
Coastal Education Internship (2 internships available)
Primary Responsibilities will include:
- Leading hands-on outdoor education programs involving seining, kayaking, and other outdoor activities.
- Leading outdoor nature walks and trips for the public.
- Assisting in community science projects involving marine life identification.
- Researching, writing, and designing public education materials on coastal/marine topics for various audiences.
- Representing the Society at outreach events.
Qualifications: College students with environmental science, marine science, ecology, education or similar background may apply. Informal and/or formal education teaching experience preferred, and a qualified individual must enjoy sharing their enthusiasm for the littoral zone with people from all age groups and walks of life. A basic knowledge of coastal ecosystems and the ability to identify local flora and fauna is necessary for this position. The internship will require the use of a personal vehicle and laptop.
This internship opportunity is part time and hours are flexible with some evening and weekends required. This is an excellent opportunity to work with a well-established organization that promotes coastal conservation through education, restoration, and advocacy.
