Berea College’s Creative Writing Program and Department of English invites applications for the position of Visiting Assistant Professor in Creative Writing with an emphasis in poetry, for a two-year term with a start date of August 2020. We seek a poet and teacher passionate about connecting with students and programs while continuing to produce creative work. The program and department offers a minor in creative writing, as well as a major and minor in literature, and features a vibrant curriculum, a thriving visiting writers series, and is also home to Appalachian Heritage, a flourishing regional literary magazine with a national reach. Position responsibilities are for a 3:3 teaching load and include a multi-genre introductory course for creative writing students, an intermediate poetry workshop, an interdisciplinary and/or special topics course rooted in creative writing and/or literature, and the opportunity to develop an imaginative general studies course. In the second year, two of the six total courses taught would be in the general studies curriculum. Required qualifications include an MFA or a PhD in Creative Writing; demonstrated excellence in teaching; a history of high-quality, significant publications, including at least one full collection of poetry from a reputable publisher; and a commitment to exploring interdisciplinary connections, which can include a wide-range of departments and disciplines, such as Women & Gender studies, African-American studies, Latinx studies and/or Appalachian studies.
