OnePower (1PWR) is seeking a Lead Engineer for the Electrical/Computer Engineering team to
support a major effort in electrification of rural villages in Lesotho. As OnePower electrifies villages
with solar minigrids, the Electrical/Computer Engineering team will support design and deployment
based on custom minigrid design software tools, pay-as-you-go (PAYG) metering solutions, and data
management systems.
What you will do:
• Lead a small but growing team focused on development of hardware and software tools and
products for the design, deployment, and operations of rural minigrids.
• Use, adaptation, and development of tools in a range of programming languages, including
R, Python, and Matlab.
• Use, adaptation, and development of database programs and tools using Microsoft Access
and SQL.
• Ensuring end-to-end data flow and integrity, including integration from PAYG smart meters
to routers, servers, 3/4/5-G based intermediaries, and customer databases.
• Development and implementation of testing/validation procedures for new software
modules, including interfacing with other teams to ensure specifications match company
needs.
• Interfacing with mobile money providers to ensure smooth payment options for minigrid
customers.
• Oversee development of next generation PAYG smart meter hardware, including design
testing, validation, and certification,
• Interfacing hardware/software components to ensure compatibility as new elements are
introduced.
• Development and implementation of testing/validation procedures for meter
commissioning, production, and operations and maintenance QA/QC.
• Constant maintenance of up-to-date documentation on Dropbox/Github.
• Internal reporting, including weekly/bi-weekly meetings with direct supervisor and weekly
meetings interfacing with team leads across the company.
• Adapting to evolving company needs as the team grows and projects are implemented and
move into operational phase.
What we look for:
• Qualifying degree (BTech, BS, MS, or similar) in a related field and a minimum of 5 years of
experience working in hardware/software development.
• Demonstrated subject matter expertise in a range of coding languages and circuits.
• Ability to prioritize multiple parallel workstreams and communicate/coordinate with other
teams to achieve high level deliverables on time.
• Demonstrated mentorship experience, including supervision of subordinates.
• Excellent leadership skills, including goal-setting, motivation and training.
• Timely and sound decision making in a busy and complex operating environment.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and Sesotho.
