Introduction

United Manganese of Kalahari (Pty) Ltd is a leading empowerment South African company mining Manganese. The Mine is situated in Hotazel district, Northern Cape.

We are looking for suitably qualified candidate to occupy the following position

Rock Engineer

Job purpose:

Rock Engineer is responsible for providing geotechnical input and support to the design, operation and optimisation of open pits that forms part of the Mine Technical Services Department.

Duties & Responsibilities

JOB DIMENSIONS / METRICS

A legal appointment under regulation 14.1. (8) of the Mine, Health and Safety Act 29 of 1996. The role of a Rock Engineer is to analyse and determine the possible impacts on rock behaviour when placed under pressure from structures, device and follow up key recommendations to ensure safe working environment.

1: Mining Operations
• Geotechnical data collection and reporting on groundwater, pit wall stability and slope analysis.
• Hazard identification and continuous rating surveys to ensure the risk does not materialise.
• Numerical data analysis and able to use methodologies to predict potential rock failure modes.
• Identify, review and make recommendations to management regarding systems, procedures and techniques to reduce or eliminate rockfall hazards
• Input into site specific standards of Support specifications of Rock mass classification
• Geotechnical logging from surface drilling exploration programme boreholes and quality assurance on the database
• Development of geotechnical model as an input to mine design and Pit optimisation.
• Geotechnical input to determining reserve losses and dilution factors.
• Input into different planning stages – LoM, MTP & STP
• Input into mining layouts with regard to slope performance and advise on rock engineering requirements.
• Post blast assessment and reporting.
• Assess mining standard compliance and adherence to Combat of rock fall and Slope Stability COP.
• Implementation and maintenance of Real time slope monitoring programme on the mine.
• Develop Trigger Action response plans related to the Slope instabilities and waste dump management.
• Benchmark rock engineering practice in relation to established best practice (technology & systems).
• Provide inputs to the drill and blast design with regards to the blastability index of the rock.
• Provide inputs to the drill and blast team with regards to best practices in protecting the highwall against blast energy.
• Develop and maintain a Geotech Drilling Dashboard.
• Understanding of mine planning, survey, geology and mining work streams and the integration with geotechnical engineering function.
• Reporting on observations to line and technical disciplinal head
• Develop Basic Strata Control training material
• Assist in the training of mine personnel in Strata Control principles with the emphasis on identification of hazardous geological features.

2: Safety
• Developing sustainable mining system to ensure the safety of all employees in line with MHSAct requirements
• Safely carry out the duties of the 14.1 (8)
• Encourages and maintains a positive safe culture by continuous monitoring, and advising the mining team on how to eliminate unsafe conditions.
• Accident/incident investigation and associated reporting
• Custodian of the mandatory COP related to rockfalls and slope instabilities
• Training of team on basic strata control and driving awareness training related to slope stability

3: Profitability and Growth

Contributes to the growth and profitability of the company, by
• Collaborating with other management team members and company executives to achieve overall business objectives.
• Ensuring all the Slope related design are reasonably practicable to achieve safe profitable mine layouts

4: Statutory Requirements

Ensures compliance with all statutory requirements by
• Ensuring daily, weekly and monthly engagement with all business partners on compliance requirements in line with MHSAct
• Continuously overseeing / monitoring mining operations with regards to closing out geotechnical recommendations
• Ensuring the submission of all statutory reporting & permits reports is done accurately and on time
• Ensuring that only trained and competent persons can access the mine to perform mining-related activities in line with company policies
• Engaging with regulatory authorities to achieve mutual respect and collaboration

5: Mining Contractors
• Working closely with all business partners and aligning them to the principle of Geotech and give input into their day to day activities
• Working with business partners to ensure all Geotech recommendation or observations by both strata control and Rock Engineer are closed out

6: Section management

Manages staff performance, by
• Setting performance standards and goals.
• Monitoring and appraising performance against standards and agreed goals; taking corrective action as required.
• Identifying training needs and arranging training to enhance performance.
• Collaborating with HR in the recruitment and selection of staff.
• Applying the appropriate HR procedures in the process of managing staff.

6.1 Prepares (and works within) mining budgets (Operating and Capital expenses), by
• Submitting and motivating budgetary requirements and finalising with the Chief Financial Officer.
• Reporting on cost variances and devising ways of minimising negative deviations.
• Overseeing the planning and execution, in line with agreed budgets, of the section.

6.2 Provides technical leadership, by
• Ensuring continuous legal compliance with standards for the section.
• Managing and coordinating the team in the delivery of required reports.
• Establishing and enforcing all engineering standards.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
• Mining Engineering or Geology Diploma/Degree
• Minimum of 5 of years experience in opencast mining and 4 years as a rock engineer/Strata Control officer in open pit
• COM Rock Mechanics Certificate [Metalliferous Mines]

Experience required:
• Demonstrated ability to meet technical and responsibility requirements of the legal appointment
• Member of professional body (SANIRE)
• Having been the holder of the legal appointment 14.1. (8) of MHSA

Skills and Knowledge:
• Report writing skill
• Professional, verbal and written communication in English
• Communication and networking skills within the organisation and externally
• Microsoft Office Professional (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Project)
• Managing of high-performance teams
• Proficient on slope stability monitoring software and data interpretation.
