Basic purpose of position: Performs the essential inspection and repair functions necessary to repair railcars for transportation. Associates designated as "Lead Mechanic" have mastered skills required of a mechanic II and are generally required to maintain the appropriate welding certifications to make welding repairs. Lead Mechanics perform essentially error-free work without direct supervision. They place orders and maintain the accountability of inventory. Perform data input billing within RX. Assist in training new associates with work tasks of all positions.

Expectation: We expect all associates to be committed to high standards of safety, be willing and able to comply with all safety policies/rules and be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory personnel. Individuals performing this function must not pose a direct threat or significant risk of substantial harm to the safety or health of himself/herself or others. Job performance without equipment damage is essential to meeting our customer safety, quality, and production requirements.

Responsibilities:
• Maintain an assortment of company tools used to perform repairs and inspection functions required by classification level.
• Perform authorized repairs to customer equipment meeting AAR specifications.
• Lubricate railcars and stencil lubrication date on railcars.
• Accurately record, either electronically or in writing, all repairs.
• Assist, as required, in the prepping of railcars, this may include the use of backpack blowers, push brooms, vacuums, and various scraping devices to remove all debris and other non-hazardous contaminates from the inside railcar.
• Inspect and assist in opening and closing railcar doors.
• Determine if railcar or securement devices need lubrication-if lubrication is required, assist in the lubrication of hinge decks, and any securements devices.
• Qualified associates may be required to perform and document customer preventive maintenance inspections/repairs.
• Operate various types of mechanical equipment, including but not limited to, small farm tractors, all terrain vehicles, pick up trucks, and panel vans.
• Maintain accountability and maintenance for all assigned equipment.
• Perform housekeeping duties as required by site management.
• Must be able to work mandatory overtime hours when operating requirements or other business needs of RJ Corman cannot be fulfilled during regular business hours.

Additional responsibilities for associates working on Multi-levels Railcars:
• Assist in raising and lowering hinge decks.
• Inspect, repair, install and remove bridge plates.
• Inspect, and repair, below sill defects on railcars.
• Perform safety and quality audits
• Order, maintain, and inventory parts

Education Requirements:
GED or High school diploma Skill, Licenses, Certifications, and/or Special Training
• Must maintain a valid state driver's license is required to operate company equipment.
• Qualified under 15.1 American Welding Society (AWS) certification.
• QMI trained.
• Qualified M 970 rack inspector.
• Meet and maintain all requirements contained in conditions of employment policy.

Physical, Mental, & Sensory Requirements:
• Ability to constantly work in an outdoor environment, exposed to all weather elements, including extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, and noisy conditions.
• Ability to occasionally work in areas with limited lighting.
• Ability to occasionally climb, using various types of ladders, to heights in excess of 16 feet.
• Ability to frequently lift and carry up to 35 lbs.
• Ability to occasionally work in areas with less than 12 inches of vertical clearance.
• Ability to frequently bend at waist crouch for periods of time up to 1 minute.
• Constantly required to use bending, twisting, and walking motions on uneven surfaces throughout the entire work shift.
• Ability to occasionally apply opposing forces (one arm pushing while the other arm pulls) sustaining pressure while bent at the waist with hands below knees.
• Ability to occasionally walk up top 3 miles in 5 hours while bending, squatting, and twisting to perform train inspections.
• Ability to sustain pressure in awkward positions-occasionally overhead for an extended period of up to 2 minutes at a time for a total of up to 2 hours per day.
• Must be able to hear work or safety instructions verbally communicated in a normal speaking voice.
• Must be able to work independently.
• Must be able to properly wear all required Personal Protective Equipment.
