Other than technology and innovation, Japan is also known for its magnificent mountains and hiking culture. Japan’s terrain is actually very mountainous as more than 70% of its land is covered with mountains and peaks. Japan has more than 100 mountains with an altitude of minimum 2,500 meters.

Famous mountains in Japan

Let’s look at the list of the most famous and striking mountains of Japan.

Mount Fuji

Who doesn’t know about Mount Fuji? Mount Fuji is the tallest mountain with height of 3,776m and it is located in Shizuoka and Yamanashi Prefectures.

It is the first of Japan's "Three Holy Mountains" and the most iconic mountain in Japan which is open for hiking in summers. However, the perfect time for climbing it is between July to September. But of course, as the highest mountain in Japan, it’s not easy to climb so it’s best to do your research beforehand. 

You can also view this mountain from some places in Tokyo when the sky is clear. The best way to reach there from Tokyo is to take a train from Shinjuku station.

Mount Tate

Mount Tate is another of Japan’s tallest mountains located in Toyama Prefecture, with a height of 3015m. This mountain is open for hiking in summers and fall. However the best time for climbing is from April to November. it is the second of Japan's "Three Holy Mountains".

Mount Kita

Mount Kita is the tallest non-volcanic mountain in a country full of volcanoes with a height of 3,193m. It is located in Yamanashi Prefecture. It is also known as "the Leader of the Southern Alps". Climbing is open in summers. Climbers witness a range of scenery and wildlife on the way up this mountain.

Mount Aino

Mount Aino is also known as Ainodake. It is the fourth tallest mountain in Japan with a height of 3,189 m. It is a part of the Akaishi Mountains, a mountain range in the Southern Alps. 

It is located in Shizuoka Prefecture. It is a popular mountain to climb because of the amazing mountain views you can get from the top, including but not limited to Mt. Fuji in the distance. Climbing is open all year round, depending on the weather conditions.

Mount Haku

Mount Haku is the third of Japan's Three Holy Mountains. It is commonly referred to as Hakusan. Its height is 2,702.2 m. This mountain is located in the Hokuriku region. Visitors can see Shinto shrine and some volcanic lakes on this mountain at the very top, as well as a large rest area along the way for people who need to take a break.

Hiking in Japan 

Like mentioned Japan has an abundance of mountains, peaks on the highest of mountains, hills and valleys. This has naturally developed a hiking culture in the country. However, before you head for a hike, you must know the basics. There are three levels of hiking; namely, easy, medium and difficult. 

  1. Easy beginners hiking is usually casual and can be done easily in a few hours without much strain. You need not be an expert or need any special equipment in such hiking. 

  2. Intermediate level hiking may include some difficult routes Though no special equipment is required, it is recommended to wear hiking boots. You should be moderately fit.

  3. Difficult or expert hiking, as the name suggests, is the toughest and you must have the proper hiking gear for such hikes. It is not recommended for children or for people with serious health conditions.

Mount Mitake 

If you are a beginner and a nature enthusiast, you must go hiking in Mount Mitake. It is an easy trail, as you can actually take a cable car up to half the distance. It is located in the Okutama region.

You can visit Musashi-Mitake Shrine on the mountain's summit.

Mount Takao

Mount Takao is located in Hachioji-shi, Tokyo. It is a popular spot for a day hike. Along with trails for hiking, it also gives an opportunity to see a monkey park, waterfalls and Yakuoin Shrine on its summit. There are also various difficulties of trails to reach the summit so if you’re up for a challenge, try one that’s not the main trail. To reach Mount Takao from Tokyo, take the Keio Line Special Express to Takaosanguchi Station. 

Mount Yoshino

Mount Yoshino is located in Yoshino District, Nara Prefecture, Japan. It is best known for the gorgeous cherry blossom viewing spots during the trek. Hikers will not only enjoy the beautiful flowers, but the various temples, shrines as well as views from the ropeway if one opts to take it. 

Mount Mitsumine

Mount Mitsumine is most famous for its historic shrine at the summit, Mitsumine Shrine, which is often described as Japan’s most beautiful mountain shrine. Mount Mitsumine itself is part of the Chichibu region in Saitama. The shrine can be reached by car, bus or by trekking. It is open from 6:30 am to 5:00pm and entrance is free.

Mount Tsukuba

Mount Tsukuba is located near Tsukuba, Japan and is a rather easy hiking spot. It has a relaxing and extremely scenic view on the way. If the day is clear, you can even view Mount Fuji and the skyline of Tokyo from the top.

Things to know before hiking in Japan

Well whether you choose an easy, medium or difficult trek for yourself, just make sure that you are well prepared for

  • Weather changes: Yes everyone knows about the sudden weather changes on mountains. It will be a good idea to carry an umbrella or rain coats for precaution.

  • You may find more crowds on the famous mountain trails on weekends. To avoid that, you can hike on weekdays, or earlier in the morning instead.

  • It is always advisable to wear the right clothing including shoes, carry your medicine and carry cash with you.

How about hiking during cherry blossoms? 

Japanese mountains are full of scenic beauty and nature’s purity. If you are planning to travel to Japan in spring and hiking is on your list, then you must go for hikes in either Mount Takao or Mount Yoshino. You are going to view the best sceneries with the blossomed flowers all around.
