Tourists usually travel Japan with the top-class train systems, but that is not the only way to get around. Renting a car can provide a different feel, adding to your Japan experience. With this, you will be able to enjoy the scenery slowly and leisurely.

Benefits of renting a car in Japan

Generally, renting a car is convenient and could add to the travel experience of every traveler. Renting a car is a trend nowadays, especially for those who bring a lot of luggage when traveling. Travelers can easily do so through online booking or right at the arrival area of any airport. If you're looking for an extraordinary adventure away from the city or the usual tourist attractions, which are often crowded, it is recommended for you to try exploring rural places in Japan such as the Aso-Kuju National Park in Kumamoto, a living example of older Japan in Mihonoseki, the long stretches of road between cities and villages in Hokkaido and many more. These destinations are not a popular choice for some because public transportation is inconvenient, but with the help of a car rental service, it is possible nowadays. It is also highly suggested when traveling in groups so you can equally divide the expenses and have a comfortable ride with a cheaper price.

If you're picky, don't worry, because there are a variety of choices when it comes to the cars that you can use. Depending on your preference, car rental companies like Toyota Rent-A-Car or Nippon Rent-A-Car, can give you a list of their available vehicles for you to choose from. Car rental companies are all over Japan, with a good selection of cars in all sizes operating across Japan. But if you're not that familiar with car models and designs, car rental companies will surely give you the best and comfortable option. It is also an opportunity for you to try new and different cars on different parts of your trip if you so choose.

Using cars instead of trains can add to the travel experience. However, there are pros and cons when renting a car. One advantage of having a car instead of public transportation is that you can control your time, you can be spontaneous and you can stop anywhere. On the other hand, traffic is always a problem in major cities in Japan; you cannot maximize your travel if you rent a car. Renting a car is advisable only when you're exploring rural places in Japan. Some travelers always recommend using public transportation such as trains, buses, and taxis when exploring major cities in Japan like in Tokyo, Osaka, or Hokkaido because these cities have highly efficient public transportations. Also, parking may be a burdensome in these cities; it is also very expensive due to the meter per hour cost.

Most rental cars also have a GPS. It can be hard to ask directions in foreign countries; however, thanks to GPS, travelers can now pinpoint their desired location precisely.

Renting a car

If you'd like to rent a car, there are some basic requirements. You should be of legal age, have a passport, a driver's license, and a permit if you're a foreigner in Japan before you can rent a car. Once you gather all these requirements, you can book and pick a vehicle that suits you. Keep in mind the number of people you're with; make sure that there will be enough space for all of you to avoid being crowded.

One of the many perks some car rental companies give are discount vouchers when you reserve online. Take time to research the best deals offered to lessen your expense. Each company offers different promo and discounts, so be sure to choose wisely. Car rental prices typically cost 5,000 yen per day for vehicles that can accommodate 4-5 passengers that are best for city driving, leisure trips, or even business. The highest possible rates are around 20,000 yen per day for mini buses that can hold 27-29 passengers that is perfect for big groups transporting with big items of luggage. The rental price usually includes a mandatory minimum insurance fee of 1,000 yen per day, unlimited mileage, and taxes. Peak season often makes the price go higher, but if you want to pay less, just rent it for 6-12 hours - many companies offer this package. Prices may vary depending on what type of car you prefer and also on the distance, so choose supplemental options accordingly to make the most out of it.

Other things to remember about car rentals and driving in Japan

As mentioned above, a Japanese driver's license is imperative. You cannot obtain this if you're not of legal age. If you're a foreigner, an International driving permit is needed as an alternative. It is acquired in your home country, not in Japan so make sure to obtain it if you wish to rent a car in Japan. International Driving Permit (IDP) must be valid for one year, and it should be recognized under the Geneva Convention (1949). Countries such as Switzerland, Germany, France, Taiwan, Belgium, Slovenia, Monaco, Estonia only issue separate agreements that allow their citizens to drive in Japan for up to one year with an official Japanese translation of their driver's license. Japan may not recognize the driving permit from other countries, so please check the agreements in your country.

You must understand basic road rules in Japan. Accidents may happen anytime; it is your job as a renter to know the basic traffic rules. Japan is a left side driving country; some foreigners tend to be confused with this kind of driving and cause accidents, so make sure to prepare yourself if you're not used to it or better, just hire a local driver. And buckle up! It's your one way of saying you love someone is to ask them to fasten their seatbelt; it will save you money but, more importantly, your life. It is also your responsibility to research information and familiarize yourself with traffic signs.

Car drop-offs to different locations is allowed to some rental companies. Nearby drop off location is free of charge; however, if the location is further away, a drop-off fee is charged. Take note that Hokkaido does not allow rented cars to be dropped off outside its area and vice versa. Again, details may vary on how you should return your rented car to their respective outlet. When returning the car, make sure that the gas tank is full, but some companies offer reasonable rates for re-tanking in their respective outlets.

Summary

Renting a car is convenient for travelers in Japan, but it comes with great responsibility. You can search for leading and reliable companies across Japan with competitive rates and choose wisely, depending on your budget and preference. Renting a car may have some disadvantages, but it is definitely recommended for adventure travelers to have hassle-free travel and once-in-a-lifetime vacation. Whether using public transportation or renting a car, Japan will always be stunning in its own way, so make sure to spend your time here wisely!
