Introducing Onomichi, A City of Beauty and History

Onomichi is a historical port town located in eastern Hiroshima Prefecture. It actually lies in between Hiroshima and Okayama, so consider dropping by whilst making your way to Hiroshima. It has several islands on its south end which faces the sea, beautiful mountain landscapes and scenery, as well as plenty of history and culture.

History

This quaint port town has a unique history. Considering its central location, in older times, it was a major port for Kitamae-bune traveling from Osaka to Hokkaido (and vice versa). For your information, Kitamae-bune 北前船 literally translates to “Ship Heading North”, a rather apt name for a vessel heading to Hokkaido.

From the 14th to 16th centuries, the Onomichi Port was protected by a famous group of pirates called the Murakami Kaizoku. Contrary to the common image of pirates raiding towns and attacking other ships for loot, the Murakami Kaizoku instead maintained peace and order on the sea routes in exchange for pay. This contributed greatly to the city’s development.

In addition, the wealthy merchants also offered plenty of financial support to Onomichi’s maintenance and infrastructure construction.

Onomichi’s Attractions and Activities

After learning the remarkable story of how Onomichi became the port city we know today, here are some attractions and activities that you should look out for when visiting:

Setouchi Shimanami Kaido

Nishiseto Expressway, more commonly known as Shimanami Kaido

Setouchi Shimanami Kaido 瀬戸内しまなみ海道, also known as the Nishiseto Expressway 西瀬戸自動車道, is a toll highway bridge that connects Onomichi (Hiroshima Pref.) to Imabari (Ehima Pref.).

What makes it popular amongst tourists?

Cycling enthusiasts especially love Shimanami Kaido for its 70 kilometer cycling route. The amazing scenery and warm ocean breeze make it a pleasant journey. Blue lines drawn on the route mark the recommended cycling route, so take care to follow it so as not to get lost. There are also numerous shops and facilities catering to cyclist travelers.

Don’t have a bike? Not to worry as there are plenty of bike rentals available.

Setoda Sunset Beach

Love the beach? Then have a summer beach getaway at Setoda Sunset Beach, also known as Shimanami Lemon Beach. The beach is accessible from the Shimanami Kaido, so cyclists on-route can take a quick break here. The greatest highlight of Lemon Beach is its mesmerizing sunset that makes for a romantic date or awesome nature photography.

Jiko-Ji

Jiko-Ji 持光寺 was first established in the Jowa Era as a Tendai sect temple. In 1382, it was converted into a Pure Land sect of Buddhism temple. It is a branch temple of Kyoto’s Eikan-do Zenrin-Ji Temple.

The temple’s treasure, also a National Treasure of Japan, is an image of Fugen Enmei Bosatsu that was made during the Heian period. The temple’s Enmeimon 延命門 is considered a “power spot” - spiritual spot. There is a belief that crossing the gate will extend one’s lifespan.

Last but not least, Jiko-Ji is part of Onomichi’s Shichibutsu Meguri 尾道七佛めぐり(Seven Buddha Tour). This tour involves making a round of the 7 most historical temples in Onomichi that have been carefully preserved since the Heian Period. You can make it into a fun stamp rally activity as there are collectibles from each temple. You will also receive a special prize for collecting all 7.

Senkou-Ji

One of the 7 Shichibutsu Meguri, the sight of this temple along the rocky mountain surface and facing the sea is said to be one of the most beautiful in Japan. The principal image of the temple, Senjuin Kannon Bossatsu, that was created by Prince Shotoku is a hidden relic only revealed to the world once every 33 years. The next reveal is planned for 2045

Hirayama Ikuo Museum of Art

One of Japan’s most prized artists is Hirayama Ikuo. Born in 1930, he left us many great works of art before leaving us in 2009. The Hirayama Ikuo Museum of Art exhibits several of his works including those from his early childhood. A visit to this museum is greatly recommended for art enthusiasts. Many of Hirayama Ikuo’s works involve nature, landscapes, Buddhism, and the Onomichi area.

Aside from visiting local attractions and trying out different activities, your visit to Onomichi will become more memorable if you try the local cuisine.

Onomichi Ramen

A local specialty whose broth is shoyu-based with fish and pork lard. The noodles are flat and toppings include spring onions, chashu, and bamboo shoots.

Aside from Onomichi Ramen, you might also want to taste these local Onomichi dishes:

  • Onomichiyaki - A must-try Onomichi-style okonomiyaki with gizzards and ikaten (squid crisps).

  • Anago Don - Grilled marinated conger eel over a hot bowl of white rice.

  • Okoze Karaage - Deep fried stonefish is a little on the pricey side but considering its rarity worth giving it a shot.

Fresh Market Eejan Onomichi

Spare some time to explore Onomichi local life by taking a stroll through a local fresh market like Eejan Onomichi. This establishment is the perfect place to buy the freshest produce including fish.
