We recently discovered @depressed_nui, a Twitter account dedicated to sharing photos of people’s depressed stuffed toys. Although joined Twitter less than a year ago, they already have 51.3k followers! I guess depressed toys are a lot more relatable than I thought.

While working hard at our jobs at WeXpats, and definitely not slacking, my colleague showed me the Twitter for 落ち込むぬいぐるみ (ochikomu nuigurumi) - 落ち込む (ochikomu) : feeling down, depressed, sad, in low spirits / ぬいぐるみ (nuigurumi) : stuffed toy, plush toy. Thus their Twitter handle name - @depressed_nui.

My immediate, and honest reaction, "Awwww~ They’re so sad… Let’s write about it!"

And so, here we are. We contacted んちゅたぐい (nchudagui) (@iwanttobeJinrui) who operated depressed_nui for permission, and asked her some questions too. By the way, んちゅたぐい @iwanttobeJinrui creates really funny short videos, so check them out too.

Why did you start depressed_nui?

I noticed that the stuffed toys in my house look depressed, and it suddenly occurred to me that there must be depressed stuffed toys in other people’s houses too.

And just like that, depressed_nui was born, to gather photos of depressed nuigurumi from all over Japan.

How to share your depressed nuigurumi’s photo?

DM depressed_nui with photo(s) of your sad plush toys. It must be your personal stuffed toy, and not a photo you randomly came across or looked up online. You may need to wait some time before your photo is posted as she receives 10 to 20 DMs every day. At the moment, she is still going through ones received in mid-May. On average, depressed_nui posts 3 to 4 photos a day, while also handling her other social media accounts. How admirable!

Do any of them stand out in particular?

All of them? I enjoy opening the DMs, so they all leave an impression on me, including those that I didn’t end up posting.
Some people send me a passage of their memories of the stuffed animal along with the photos, and I feel healed just by reading them.

Not just receiving photos, it must be nice to hear a little something about each stuffed animal. Some of the toys look quite worn out, which is just proof that they have been loved for a long time, which is really sweet.

So Sad But So Cute, Looking at Them Makes You Go Aww

For some reason, sad looking things come off as cute. This is the case for kittens, puppies, and also stuffed animals. The sadness enhances their cuteness, making you feel sorry for them, and yet also healed by the adorableness.

Part of the fun of scrolling through @depressed_nui is seeing toys you recognise. It is also sort of a game to figure out what character it is, there are some unexpected ones. Here are some I found especially cute!

▼ This adorable piggy looks so sad! It needs a cuddle!

▼ There are days when I feel like this too…

▼ Sorry, but this one made me laugh. It reminded me of a particular cat gif.

▼ “It is nice to have someone with you when you’re feeling sad. “ - feat. Sanrio's Pochacco and an unidentifiable penguin.

▼ The huge eyes…

▼ Is this toy okay...?

▼ Pingu already has some pretty sad scenes in the cartoon, but this one really drives it home…

Thank you to @depressed_nui for allowing us to cover this. If you are interested in seeing more sad toys, make sure to follow, perhaps you would like to share one of your own?
